Best with the brawny V10 option, adequate with the base gas V8, leisurely with the turbodiesel, which still pulls quite well. Manual shift precise but clunky; automatic transmission responsive and smooth.

We haven't done full tests, but economy is best with the turbodiesel, worst with the V10, OK with the base gas V8.

SDs we've sampled have a smooth ride for such firmly damped big trucks, helped by long wheelbases and bump-crushing weight.

Fine for big, tall pickups with solid-axle suspensions. Steering a bit numb on-center, but responsive enough. Hard stops swift and undramatic even on slick roads. Electronic shift-on-the-fly 4WD a plus for convenience, but not usable on dry pavement.

Wind noise rises sharply at highway speeds in these boxy rigs, but tire noise isn't annoying and all engines are restrained, though not hushed, except at high rpm.

Standard bench seat has space aplenty for three big guys, but is too hard and flat for long-haul comfort. Available twin captain's-chair buckets are more relaxing. Step-in varies with model; 4x4s with optional 19-inch wheels require a Paul Bunyan stretch, though side steps are available. Commanding visibility in all models.

SuperCabs have much less leg space and tougher entry/exit than Crews. Both types have rather upright bench seats that could use more padding.

The new HD Chevy Silverado/GMC Sierra models are at least equal in most ways and maybe a bit more refined and comfortable, but these Fords have all the power, toughness, and comfort to satisfy big-truck users.
