2001 Dodge Viper Review
This high-performance 2-seater gets standard antilock brakes for 2001. Viper's GTS coupe and RT/10 convertible share a 450-hp 8.0-liter V10, America's largest and most-powerful production automobile engine. The coupe's optional racetrack-intended ACR package adds 10 hp. A 6-speed manual transmission is mandatory. Clutch, brake, and gas pedals manually adjustable for reach. The convertible offers an optional hard top. Side airbags and traction control are unavailable. Blue pearl and yellow exterior hues are new for '01, the latter available with black stripes.
Competition
This class features an interesting mix of hard-core performance models and more luxurious touring convertibles. Our Best Buys give you a little of both worlds. The Chevrolet Corvette is fast, comfortable, and reasonably affordable. Unlike previous models it doesn't beat you up with a hard ride, and it will cruise quietly at highway speeds. Our other Best Buy, the Mazda Miata, is a bare-bones roadster with few frills and average acceleration, but for weekend fun on a twisty back road it's hard to beat.

If you don't mind spending a few more bucks, we recommend you take a look at the Mercedes-Benz SLK. The Mercedes offers an interesting mix of performance and luxury. It also has a retractable hardtop, making it more of an all-weather car.
News
Dodge unveiled the much-anticipated second-generation Viper at last January's North American International Auto Show in Detroit--a full 18 months early. Though full details weren't released, the '03 model will initially be sold only in RT/10 roadster form, though Dodge says that a new GTS coupe is on the way, and probably sooner than later.

The new Viper is about the same size as the original, and little more sophisticated, though the roadster finally loses its rear "sport bar" and flimsy "bikini top" in favor of a full manual-fold canopy that should ward off the elements far better and be infinitely more convenient. This also enhances the new roadster styling, which is recognizeably Viper but crisper and, from some angles, more aggressive. Side exhaust pipes return, only integral with the body and shielded to meet noise regulations and to forestall fried legs. Construction again involves a steel chassis and a composite-plastic body with some aluminum panels. The 4-wheel double-wishbone suspension stays roughly the same too, but wheel diameter goes from 18 to 19 inches, allowing room for larger 4-wheel antilock disc brakes. Tires are Z-rated, as before, and even more massive at the rear (345/30s versus 335/30s).

The big news is that Viper's trademark pushrod alumimum V10 has been morphed to 500 cubic inches, 500 horsepower, and 500 pound-feet of torque, delivered through a fortified 6-speed manual gearbox. With that and fractionally less weight, the '03 should easily outperform today's 450-hp Viper, which does 0-60 mph in about 4.5 sec. Dodge hasn't yet made performance claims for the '03, but suggests the new 220-mph speedometer is there for a reason. Traction control or antiskid system? Fuggedaboudit. Viper has always been a chest-thumping "elemental" muscle car, and Dodge isn't about to change that.

It also doesn't intend to change price very much, though the '03 will have a few extra standard goodies. Some observers expect stickers to rise slowly within months of introduction. Keep checking back with us for further information as it comes to light.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

RT/10 GTS Class Average
10 10 7.7

Brutal power from virtually any speed in any gear.
Fuel Economy

RT/10 GTS Class Average
2 2 4.7

Poor. Just 12.2-14 mpg in our tests, even with lots of freeway driving, where overdrive 5th and 6th gears help economy.
Ride Quality

RT/10 GTS Class Average
2 2 3.5

Stiff and thumpy except on very smooth surfaces. Roadster is almost flex-free, but bonded-on body panels flutter and vibrate.
Steering/Handling/Braking

RT/10 GTS Class Average
8 9 7.8

Stiff structure, firm chassis, ultra-wide tires mean enormous cornering grip and virtually no body lean. But Viper's a handful on wet surfaces. Brakes have extraordinarily strong stopping power. We applaud this year's addition of standard ABS.
Quietness

RT/10 GTS Class Average
1 1 3.6

High noise levels from all sources. Convertible suffers wind buffeting with top removed.
Controls

RT/10 GTS Class Average
3 3 5.2

Nothing fancy in layout or materials. Businesslike presentation.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

RT/10 GTS Class Average
4 4 5

Entry/exit is usual sports-car squeeze, and seats low with high center hump. But head and leg room are ample. Considerable engine heat demands frequent use of air conditioner.
Room/Comfort (rear)

RT/10 GTS Class Average
0 0 .7

(No rear seating.)
Cargo Room

RT/10 GTS Class Average
1 2 2.1

Roadster's tiny, ill-shaped trunk holds little more than a couple of gym bags. GTS can take a weekend's worth of soft luggage. No interior storage to speak of.
Value within Class

RT/10 GTS Class Average
2 3 4

There are more-civilized high-performance sports cars that cost less and demand less energy to drive. But few automobiles of any price match Viper's bold nature. Supply trails demand, so don't expect a big discount.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

NHTSA Crash-Test Results
Test Dodge Viper 2-door hatchback Dodge Viper 2-door convertible
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests a vehicle's worthiness in front- and side-impact collisions and rates its resistance to rollovers. Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.

The Exhaust Emission Warranty covers corrosion-related parts for 2 years/24,000 miles, plus 8 years/80,000 miles on the catalytic converter and any on-board diagnostic device. The Passenger Restraint Warranty covers seat belts and airbags for 5 years/50,000 miles.
