ACCELERATION

RT/10 GTS Class Average
10 10 7.7

Brutal power from virtually any speed in any gear.

FUEL ECONOMY

RT/10 GTS Class Average
2 2 4.7

Poor. Just 12.2-14 mpg in our tests, even with lots of freeway driving, where overdrive 5th and 6th gears help economy.

RIDE QUALITY

RT/10 GTS Class Average
2 2 3.5

Stiff and thumpy except on very smooth surfaces. Roadster is almost flex-free, but bonded-on body panels flutter and vibrate.

STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING

RT/10 GTS Class Average
8 9 7.8

Stiff structure, firm chassis, ultra-wide tires mean enormous cornering grip and virtually no body lean. But Viper's a handful on wet surfaces. Brakes have extraordinarily strong stopping power. We applaud this year's addition of standard ABS.

QUIETNESS

RT/10 GTS Class Average
1 1 3.6

High noise levels from all sources. Convertible suffers wind buffeting with top removed.

CONTROLS

RT/10 GTS Class Average
3 3 5.2

Nothing fancy in layout or materials. Businesslike presentation.

ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)

RT/10 GTS Class Average
4 4 5

Entry/exit is usual sports-car squeeze, and seats low with high center hump. But head and leg room are ample. Considerable engine heat demands frequent use of air conditioner.

ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)

RT/10 GTS Class Average
0 0 .7

(No rear seating.)

CARGO ROOM

RT/10 GTS Class Average
1 2 2.1

Roadster's tiny, ill-shaped trunk holds little more than a couple of gym bags. GTS can take a weekend's worth of soft luggage. No interior storage to speak of.

VALUE WITHIN CLASS

RT/10 GTS Class Average
2 3 4

There are more-civilized high-performance sports cars that cost less and demand less energy to drive. But few automobiles of any price match Viper's bold nature. Supply trails demand, so don't expect a big discount.
