Vehicle Highlights

Dodge's midsize sedans and coupes are redesigned for 2001. The Stratus coupe, formerly known as the Dodge Avenger, shares its design with the Chrysler Sebring coupe; both use powertrains and platforms from Mitsubishi's Eclipse and Galant. The Stratus sedan shares its design with the Chrysler Sebring sedan and convertible. Styling is familiar despite all-new sheetmetal, and dimensions change little.

Coupes feature SE and R/T models. The SE comes with a 4-cyl engine and offers an optional Mitsubishi-made 3.0-liter V6. The V6 is standard on the R/T. Both coupes use manual transmission or optional automatic; R/T automatics have a manual-shift gate

Sedans feature SE and ES models. The SE comes with a 4-cyl engine and offers an optional Chrysler-made 2.7-liter V6. The V6 is standard on the ES. Both come only with automatic transmission, though ES's gets a manual-shift gate. Curtain side airbags optional on sedans. No torso side airbags offered. ABS is available on all but the SE coupe.

COMPETITION

Perennial Best Buys Honda Accord and Toyota Camry continue to shine with refinement, model diversity, and comfort. Both come in coupe and sedan forms, offer economic 4-cylinder or sporty V6 power, have room for four adults, and are reasonably priced.

Recommended models include the smooth Chevrolet Impala, the import-flavored Chevy Malibu, the sporty Nissan Maxima, surprising Olds Intrigue, and the good-looking Pontiac Grand Prix. All come with V6 power, offer lots of standard equipment, and have pleasing road manners that will suit a variety of driving styles. We've also added the Ford Taurus and clone Mercury Sable to our Recommended list.
