ACCELERATION
| SX, CDX | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 3 | 4.9 |
A sleepy 11 sec 0-60 mph in our test. Turning on the air conditioning sapped what little engine punch was still available.
FUEL ECONOMY
| SX, CDX | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 6 | 5.4 |
Test car averaged 22.4 mpg in fairly hard driving. That's not bad, but it's not great for a 4-cyl compact.
RIDE QUALITY
| SX, CDX | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 6 | 5.3 |
Smooth over scalloped freeways, but more prone to "float" over large undulations than a modern family car should be. There's also some harshness on patchy pavement.
STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING
| SX, CDX | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 3 | 5.1 |
Soft damping and low-achiever tires make for safe but soggy handling, signaled by early tire squeal in tight corners. Braking is fine: short, stable, and mostly level in our simulated emergency stops.
QUIETNESS
| SX, CDX | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 5 | 5.2 |
Engine never sounds "expensive," but it's not annoyingly loud except when worked really hard. Wind and road noise are checked well, too.
CONTROLS
| SX, CDX | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 4 | 6 |
No real problems despite a few odd design details. Interior finish quite nice for the price, but trunklid has a flimsy action and doors close with a tinny clang.
ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)
| SX, CDX | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 4 | 5.5 |
Actually one of the larger compacts, with fine leg room and plenty of head and shoulder clearance. Good basic driving position with sufficient adjustments; CDX benefits from standard power driver's seat.
ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)
| SX, CDX | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 3 | 4.1 |
Fine for two adults, with generally good seat comfort. Decent entry/exit too.
CARGO ROOM
| SX, CDX | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 3 | 4.5 |
Flat-floor low-lip trunk has good space, but the optional trunk-mounted CD changer on our test CDX was located so as to preclude carrying bulky objects.
VALUE WITHIN CLASS
| SX, CDX | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 2 | 5.8 |
Generally class-competitive, but most rivals go for the same or less money and carry stronger warranties. Worse, Daewoo's uncertain future means big-time depreciation today and poor trade-in value tomorrow.
