2001 Daewoo Lanos Full Review
Date Published: 2/20/08
2001 Daewoo Lanos Review
Lanos is the smallest model offered in the U.S. by this embattled South Korean automaker. It comes as a 2-dr hatchback and 4-dr sedan, both with a 4-cyl engine and manual or optional automatic transmission. The Sport hatchback comes standard with such features as air conditioning and leather upholstery, but Lanos is among the few cars that does not offer ABS. Daewoo's warranty covers normal maintenance and roadside assistance for the first year.
Competition
A perennial favorite, the Honda Civic, is new and better than ever. We love the wide range of bodystyles, engines, and equipment. Civic is a solid car that has good performance, a nice ride, and a high degree of civility. New last year was the Ford Focus. Though we loved almost everything about the Focus, we were reluctant to rank it a Best Buy because it was new from the ground up. After a year of living with a ZTS model, we can say that the reliability is good. Focus ranks a notch below Civic in some areas but costs less. Topping the crowded Recommended list are the Volkswagen Golf and Jetta. They easily could be Best Buys as they are better than the Civic in many ways. However, they are also the most expensive cars in this segment. Other Recommended choices include the no-frills Dodge Neon and Toyota Echo, the slightly-upscale Nissan Sentra, and the roomy Mazda Protege. If you are looking for a budget buy, the Hyundai Accent offers a lot for your dollar, however, it's not as refined as more-expensive competitors.
News
Daewoo Motor Company may be fighting for survival at home, but its U.S. branch has been doing very well lately, with total sales more than doubling year-over-year to nearly 68,400 in calendar 2000. That's not bad for a brand launched here barely three years ago, and it's a better performance than South Korean compatriots Kia and Hyundai turned in, though they're at 234,000 and 98,000, respectively. The entry-level Lanos helped Daewoo's cause, scoring some 22,000 sales for the 12 months, a stunning 136-percent gain over '99.

The South Korean parent company is still struggling to dig out from under a mountain of debt via an outright takeover, with General Motors now the only possible savior. Assuming Daewoo stays alive, Lanos should be redesigned for model-year 2003. Not much is known about the new model so far, but we'd expect it to be a little larger, with an engine to match, so as to compete more directly with Hyundai's Accent and other entry-level small cars.

Meantime, this year's Lanos Sport hatchback is apparently a limited edition. Daeoo recently announced that U.S. sales of this model are being capped at just 2000. No word yet on whether there will be any more for 2002.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

S sdn, auto. Sport hatch, man. Class Average
2 2 3.7

Automatic-equipped test sedan needed 12.3 sec. 0-60 mph, marginal for a modern subcompact. Equally disappointing, the automatic mostly shifted with a lurch.
Fuel Economy

S sdn, auto. Sport hatch, man. Class Average
6 7 6.8

Test average of 24.7 mpg is not great in light of the tepid acceleration.
Ride Quality

S sdn, auto. Sport hatch, man. Class Average
3 3 3.7

Like some other small lightweights, Lanos displays fidgety hop on freeways and rumbly jiggle on rough pavement.
Steering/Handling/Braking

S sdn, auto. Sport hatch, man. Class Average
2 2 4.2

Responsive and front-drive safe, but wimpy all-season tires make for marked nose plowing and only modest grip in tight turns. Our test car made short, stable emergency stops despite lacking ABS.
Quietness

S sdn, auto. Sport hatch, man. Class Average
3 3 3.6

Engine isn't noisy in gentle cruising, but turns raspy and irritating when worked hard--which it often must be. Wind noise fairly high, but tire thrum low except on coarse surfaces.
Controls

S sdn, auto. Sport hatch, man. Class Average
6 6 5.5

Clear and simple. Audio switches fairly large, but sit below climate panel and aren't easy to adjust while driving. Larger drivers may wish for more rearward seat travel. Interior materials look sturdy but pedestrian.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

S sdn, auto. Sport hatch, man. Class Average
4 4 4.3

Decent room and good ingress and egress, but seats lack proper thigh support and don't seem long-haul comfortable.
Room/Comfort (rear)

S sdn, auto. Sport hatch, man. Class Average
3 2 3.1

Two medium-size grownups fit, but knee room is very tight behind a tall front-seater, the backrest is uncomfortably angled, and small rear doorways hamper sedan entry/exit. Hatchback is even tighter in back and trickier to access.
Cargo Room

S sdn, auto. Sport hatch, man. Class Average
2 6 3.3

Lanos offers one of the market's few hatchbacks, but it has only adequate cargo room. The sedan's trunk is small even for a subcompact.
Value within Class

S sdn, auto. Sport hatch, man. Class Average
1 1 4.6

Lanos isn't that cheap for what it is and does, and Daewoo's future is uncertain even though U.S. dealers now number 300. In all, a poor entry-level choice, especially now that Korean rivals Hyundai and Kia offer longer, more comprehensive warranties.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

NHTSA Crash-Test Results
Test Daewoo Lanos 2-door hatchback Daewoo Lanos 4-door sedan
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests a vehicle's worthiness in front- and side-impact collisions and rates its resistance to rollovers. Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.
