2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser Full Review
Date Published: 3/14/08
2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser Review
Chrysler's retro "category buster" compact combines carlike design with minivan and SUV features. PT Cruiser seats five, and size-wise compares to Honda's CR-V compact SUV. Some mechanical components are similar to those in the subcompact Dodge Neon. Sole engine is 2.4-liter 4-cyl with 5-speed manual or optional 4-speed automatic transmission. ABS and front-side airbags are optional. An optional Touring Group includes a firmer suspension and 16-inch wheels instead of 15s. Limited Edition package includes the Touring Group, plus leather upholstery, power sunroof, and a fold-flat front passenger seat.
Competition
Not really a sport-utility or minivan, the PT has been well received by our staff. It offers versatility and eye-catching styling not found among compact cars. Its only drawback is tepid acceleration. Also getting the nod as a Best Buy is the Nissan Altima. It is the best all-around performer offering room for four large adults, a comfortable but sporty ride, above average acceleration, and good fuel economy.

Recommended choices include the sporty Mitsubishi Galant, the vanilla Mazda 626, and the refined Volkswagen Passat. Hyundai's Sonata is a viable alternative if cash is tight. Though just an average performer on the road, Sonata's below average price and quality construction help it stand out.
News
PT Cruiser is still one of the hottest cars on today's market. Chrysler moved nearly 92,000 in calendar 2000--nearly 11,000 in December alone--and could have sold many more if its Mexican plant could have built them. Though Chrysler has been looking at ways to boost production, don't expect shorter waiting lists--or at-sticker transaction prices--until the company gets past its current financial crisis.

Corporate money woes are sure to play hob with near-term plans for new features and models. For example, a high-ranking Chrysler executive told us at the PT press preview that a turbocharged 2.4-liter 4-cyl with around 200 horsepower would be available sometime in 2001, but subsequent insider reports say it won't be offered until model-year 2003. Still reportedly being considered are an interior upgrade, optional navigation system, a 2-dr panel van version, and a convertible (similar to the concept seen at the 2001 New York Show). While none these ideas is a done deal yet, Chrysler won't likely tamper much with the existing Cruiser's basic concept and character, at least not until demand shows signs of tapering off.

One development we can confirm for 2002: a $495 "flame" package. Many PT owners have already added this hot-rod style touch, with the flame effect typically rendered in classic black, orange and red. The new factory option will reportedly use more muted colors keyed to the paint.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

Base w/Limited Pkg., auto. Base w/Limited Pkg., man. Class Average
4 5 3.7

Fine for around-town cruising, but weak on hills or in highway passing. Automatic transmission is pretty responsive, but sometimes lurches in downshifts.
Fuel Economy

Base w/Limited Pkg., auto. Base w/Limited Pkg., man. Class Average
5 5 6.8

Averaged 18.5-23.0 mpg in our tests with automatic trans; 5-speed averaged 21.7.
Ride Quality

Base w/Limited Pkg., auto. Base w/Limited Pkg., man. Class Average
5 5 3.7

We haven't tested the base suspension. Firmer Touring setup is comfortably controlled, except on washboard surfaces, where it tends to jiggle.
Steering/Handling/Braking

Base w/Limited Pkg., auto. Base w/Limited Pkg., man. Class Average
6 6 4.2

Solid, stable handling without top-heavy tippiness. Steering is responsive, appropriately assisted. Extra-cost antilock 4-wheel discs furnish strong stopping power, good pedal feel.
Quietness

Base w/Limited Pkg., auto. Base w/Limited Pkg., man. Class Average
4 4 3.6

Slightly quieter overall than a compact SUV. Coarse pavement induces some road roar with the Touring Group tires, wind noise starts to intrude at 65 mph, and the engine sounds coarse above 4000 rpm.
Controls

Base w/Limited Pkg., auto. Base w/Limited Pkg., man. Class Average
5 5 5.5

Dashboard is retro styled, but with contemporary ease of use. Materials seem more upscale than Cruiser's price suggests. Outward sightlines are clear, although rear head restraints are a minor obstruction.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

Base w/Limited Pkg., auto. Base w/Limited Pkg., man. Class Average
7 7 4.3

High body build provides abundant head room even with sunroof. Seats are comfortably chair-height. Step-in is no higher than a typical car's.
Room/Comfort (rear)

Base w/Limited Pkg., auto. Base w/Limited Pkg., man. Class Average
6 6 3.1

Same chair-height stance as front; 6-footers are comfortable and uncrowded in outboard positions. Enough room for a rear center-seater with a little crowding.
Cargo Room

Base w/Limited Pkg., auto. Base w/Limited Pkg., man. Class Average
7 7 3.3

Generous and versatile, especially with available fold-flat front passenger seat. Modest space behind rear seat but it folds and removes as in minivans and SUVs.
Value within Class

Base w/Limited Pkg., auto. Base w/Limited Pkg., man. Class Average
9 9 4.6

Roomy, comfortable, adaptable, and fun. Mediocre acceleration is the only flaw. Affordable too, but strong demand keeps prices high.

Model Prices
Prices Updated: 06/01/2000
Trim Name Retail Price Dealer Invoice Destination Charge
Base 4-door wagon $15,935 $15,001 $565
Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests a vehicle's worthiness in front- and side-impact collisions and rates its resistance to rollovers. Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.
