ACCELERATION

LX, 2.7 V6 LXi, 3.2 V6 Class Average
4 5 5.6

LXi's 3.2 liter has good low-speed and passing power. LX's 2.7 is adequate, but feels overworked on highway. Neither is as strong as General Motors' 3.8-liter.

FUEL ECONOMY

LX, 2.7 V6 LXi, 3.2 V6 Class Average
6 5 4.8

LX's fuel economy is impressive for a large car: averaged 26.2 mpg in our tests, mostly on highways. The LXi averages about 21 mpg.

RIDE QUALITY

LX, 2.7 V6 LXi, 3.2 V6 Class Average
7 7 6.1

Soaks up rough roads well. Stable on highway.

STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING

LX, 2.7 V6 LXi, 3.2 V6 Class Average
6 6 5

Steers and corners with responsive confidence, though not as crisp as sportier Intrepid and 300M. Brakes are weaker than some rivals, and pedal feel is mushy.

QUIETNESS

LX, 2.7 V6 LXi, 3.2 V6 Class Average
5 5 6

Quiet as most similarly priced competitors.

CONTROLS

LX, 2.7 V6 LXi, 3.2 V6 Class Average
6 6 5.3

Clear gauges. Large, well-marked climate and audio controls. Interior materials are of good quality, although roof pillars have hard plastic trim and door panels look Spartan. Narrow rear window restricts visibility.

ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)

LX, 2.7 V6 LXi, 3.2 V6 Class Average
7 7 7

Generous height and width, but bench's inboard position is child-sized. Front passenger seat lacks leg room for 6-footers to stretch.

ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)

LX, 2.7 V6 LXi, 3.2 V6 Class Average
7 7 5.9

One of few cars wide enough to carry three adults comfortably. Slightly more head room than in Intrepid. Doorways are big, but their shape hampers entry.

CARGO ROOM

LX, 2.7 V6 LXi, 3.2 V6 Class Average
6 6 5.8

Amply sized trunk. Opening is wider than Intrepid's, but liftover is high. Rear seat pass-through is handy.

VALUE WITHIN CLASS

LX, 2.7 V6 LXi, 3.2 V6 Class Average
9 9 7

Acceleration and reliability could be better. But distinctive styling, roomy interior, and fine handling make this an impressive value nonetheless.
