ACCELERATION
| SS | LS | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | 5 | 4.9 |
Adequate with base V6, thanks in part to responsive automatic transmission. SS is no rocket, but its bigger V6 provides brisk takeoffs, ready power for passing.
FUEL ECONOMY
| SS | LS | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | 5 | 5.4 |
Low 20-mpg range in our tests with either model. Both use regular fuel.
RIDE QUALITY
| SS | LS | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | 5 | 5.3 |
Stable in freeway cruising and comfortable overall; even SS is compliant enough on bumpy city streets.
STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING
| SS | LS | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | 5 | 5.1 |
LS has modest abilities, but feels reasonably balanced and secure in corners. SS shines on twisty roads, showing little body lean and good grip. Both have slightly overassisted but accurate steering. Brakes feel strong, with good pedal resistance, but hard stops induce excessive nosedive.
QUIETNESS
| SS | LS | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | 6 | 5.2 |
Engines are loud and gruff in full-throttle acceleration; tire roar prominent on coarse surfaces.
CONTROLS
| SS | LS | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | 6 | 6 |
Gauge groupings and graphics are excellent, controls fall easily to hand. Individual temperature controls for driver and front passenger standard on SS, optional LS.
ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)
| SS | LS | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | 6 | 5.5 |
Midsize-car dimensions mean more space than in most "sports coupes." Two adults can stretch out on comfortable bucket seats. Thick rear roof pillars impede over-the-shoulder vision. Long doors heavy, cumbersome. Cabin materials nothing special.
ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)
| SS | LS | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | 3 | 4.1 |
Leg room adequate for average-size adults, though head room gets tight with optional sunroof and entry/exit is twist-and-stoop. Still, more space than in Toyota Solara or Honda Accord and Dodge Stratus/Chrysler Sebring coupes.
CARGO ROOM
| SS | LS | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | 4 | 4.5 |
Trunk is tall, wide, and deep with convenient bumper-height liftover.
VALUE WITHIN CLASS
| SS | LS | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | 4 | 5.8 |
Beats most like-priced coupes on a features-per-dollar basis. Not as polished as Japanese-brand rivals and won't hold its value as well, but this Chevy has its own American-car character.
