2001 Buick Regal Review
Regal shares a basic design with Buick's conservative Century sedan, but is more similar in market positioning and performance to its other platform-mates, the Oldsmobile Intrigue and Pontiac Grand Prix. Regal comes in LS and uplevel GS sedans. Both have automatic transmission and a V6 engine; the GS adds a supercharger for more power. ABS 4-wheel discs, a tire-pressure monitor, and traction control are standard. Leather upholstery, side airbag for the driver, firmer Gran Touring suspension, and General Motors' OnStar assistance system are standard on GS, optional on LS. The Joseph Abboud fashion designer package adds special paint, trim, and Gran Touring suspension.
Competition
Perennial Best Buys Honda Accord and Toyota Camry continue to shine with refinement, model diversity, and comfort. Both come in coupe and sedan forms, offer economic 4-cylinder or sporty V6 power, have room for four adults, and are reasonably priced.

Recommended models include the smooth Chevrolet Impala, the import-flavored Chevy Malibu, the sporty Nissan Maxima, surprising Olds Intrigue, and the good-looking Pontiac Grand Prix. All come with V6 power, offer lots of standard equipment, and have pleasing road manners that will suit a variety of driving styles. We've also added the Ford Taurus and clone Mercury Sable to our Recommended list.
News
Like sister Century, Regal scored lower sales in calendar 2000, but declined more (12 percent versus Century's 9) to around 65,000. An aging basic design (vintage 1997) is probably to blame in each case.

Regal will remain pretty much as is until model-year 2004, when it's scheduled to be redesigned on General Motors' new front-drive "Mid Lux" platform. Century may follow the same program. Not much is known about either version now, but Regal may offer some exclusive features seen on the 1999 Regal Cielo concept, such as a fully retracting glass sunroof/rear window and an in-car "Personal Vehicle Assistance" system designed to work with various portable data and game devices. Late word is that budget-minded GM may drop Regal or Century with the redesign, feeling that sales don't justify the expense of fielding two related midsize Buick sedans.

On the horizon for 2005 is Signia, a midsize sport wagon built on a stretched version of GM's upcoming Epsilon front-drive platform. (Pontiac was to follow suit with its similar Banner, but that one probably won't make it, according to recent rumors.) Again, specifics are hard to come by, but Signia should be another "crossover" SUV, though with a more car-like profile than the recently introduced Rendezvous. However, Buick has lately put Signia on the back burner, so it's unclear now whether this model will actually see the light of day.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

GS LS Class Average
7 6 4.9

Both Regals feel strong, and in our tests the GS did 0-60 mph in 6.9 sec, the LS in about 8 sec. Transmission shifts smoothly, promptly.
Fuel Economy

GS LS Class Average
5 5 5.4

GS requires premium fuel, but is not much thirstier than the LS, averaging between 16.9 and 20.1 mpg in our tests.
Ride Quality

GS LS Class Average
6 6 5.3

Controlled and comfortable. LS's base suspension rides and handles nearly as well as GS's Gran Touring setup.
Steering/Handling/Braking

GS LS Class Average
6 5 5.1

Not European-sport-sedan agile, but controlled and well-balanced. GS pulls to the side due to torque steer in hard takeoffs. Brakes are strong and capable, pedal feel firm.
Quietness

GS LS Class Average
6 6 5.2

Some wind and road noise at highway speeds, but quiet overall.
Controls

GS LS Class Average
5 5 6

Climate controls too complex, but most gauges and switches are legible and well-placed. Interior ambiance suffers from lots of hard plastic surfaces.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

GS LS Class Average
5 5 5.5

Roomy, but shorter people might feel confined by the tall dashboard. Subpar lateral support.
Room/Comfort (rear)

GS LS Class Average
4 4 4.1

Sufficient head and leg room for larger passengers, but cushion is too short and soft for adequate support. Not wide enough to comfortably fit three adults.
Cargo Room

GS LS Class Average
4 5 4.5

Trunklid opens wide, hinges don't intrude. But there's a wide bumper shelf to stretch over.
Value within Class

GS LS Class Average
5 5 5.8

Less refined than Honda Accord or Toyota Camry, though competitively priced and well-equipped. Still, Regal falls short of the cohesive feel that earns the Oldsmobile Intrigue and Pontiac Grand Prix our Recommended label.

Model Prices
Prices Updated: 09/15/2000
Trim Name Retail Price Dealer Invoice Destination Charge
LS 4-door sedan $22,965 $21,013 $610
GS 4-door sedan $26,390 $24,147 $610
Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests a vehicle's worthiness in front- and side-impact collisions and rates its resistance to rollovers. Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.
