2001 Buick Park Avenue Full Review
Date Published: 2/20/08
2001 Buick Park Avenue Review
Buick's flagship comes in base and Ultra models, both with a V6 and automatic transmission, though Ultras have a supercharger for more power. ABS, self-leveling rear suspension, leather upholstery, and memory power front seats are standard. Grand Touring option includes firmer suspension and more aggressive tires. General Motors' OnStar assistance and StabiliTrak antiskid systems are standard on Ultra, optional on base, as are traction control and a tire-pressure monitor. Rear obstacle warning system is optional on both.
Competition
This hotly contested segment has a clear benchmark; it is the Acura TL (and its 2-door cousin Acura CL). The TL succeeds in blending comfort, style, luxury, and sport into an efficient package at an affordable price. If you are leaning more toward the luxury scale, the Lexus ES 300 might be a more practical purchase.

We also recommend the sporty and Euro-flavored Audi A6, the comfortable Buick Park Avenue, the affordable and fast Infiniti I30.
News
Until recently, Detroit moles thought Park Avenue would be replaced after 2004 by the car-like midsize Signia sport wagon (see News under Buick Regal. But in an apparent rethink, Buick has put Signia on hold while stepping up development of a high-style multi-purpose sedan based on the 2000 LaCrosse concept.

Whatever happens, the familiar Park Avenue seems doomed. Calendar-year sales dropped a steep 25 percent in 2000 (to under 48,000), and the Buick flagship does interfere somewhat with Cadillac's related DeVille. General Motors is struggling for market share, and though it may have killed Oldsmobile, it still wants to weed out other models that don't earn their keep. Park Avenue hasn't been a strong seller in some time, and thus looks a prime target for corporate cost-cutters. If the model does survive, it may be simply become an uplevel version of the next-generation 2005 LeSabre.

The production LaCrosse may or may not replace Park Avenue (or use that name), but is sure to reflect GM's newfound fondness for "transformer" vehicles like the 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche SUV/pickup. The concept LaCrosse was a coupe-like design with small rear-hinged back doors and a novel rear end that could be converted from conventional trunk to pickup-style cargo box. These features should survive to the showroom, though Buick will likely tone down the concept's styling and simplify some other elements for the sake of quality, price and sales.

Buick is also said to be "productionizing" its well-received 2001 Bengal concept, a shapely two-seat convertible measuring 25 inches shorter than a LeSabre on a Park Avenue-size wheelbase. Also featured: a supercharged 3.4-liter V6 with 250 hp, prototype 6-speed automatic transmission, and numerous electronic widgets. Details are still being decided, so it's unclear how many of these and other concept features will appear on a showroom Bengal. Timing is also a guess at this point, but GM probably couldn't have it ready before model-year 2004.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

Base Ultra w/Gran Touring Pkg. Class Average
5 6 5.6

Ultras are impressively quick, base models have ample power, both aided by smooth, alert transmission.
Fuel Economy

Base Ultra w/Gran Touring Pkg. Class Average
5 4 4.8

Test Ultra averaged 15.3 mpg in mostly city driving on the Buick-recommended premium fuel. Base model uses regular gas and averaged 19.8 mpg in a city/highway mix.
Ride Quality

Base Ultra w/Gran Touring Pkg. Class Average
7 7 6.1

Standard chassis favors comfort over handling and delivers a cushy ride. Firmer Gran Touring setup provides better body control, less float over dips without being harsh.
Steering/Handling/Braking

Base Ultra w/Gran Touring Pkg. Class Average
4 6 5

Mushy and imprecise with standard suspension. Gran Touring option reduces body lean, front-end plowing, and steering numbness. StabiliTrak works well. Brakes are strong, but nose dives in hard stops, especially with base suspension.
Quietness

Base Ultra w/Gran Touring Pkg. Class Average
7 7 6

Cabin feels substantial and hushed, but Gran Touring's aggressive tires are noisy on coarse pavement.
Controls

Base Ultra w/Gran Touring Pkg. Class Average
7 7 5.3

Traditional layout works well enough. Available head-up display is useful to some testers, distracting to others. Cabin decor is tastefully conservative and uses materials that are pleasing, but not quite in a league with near-luxury rivals from Japan and Europe.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

Base Ultra w/Gran Touring Pkg. Class Average
7 7 7

Abundant head and leg room on comfortable seats, though bench seat is too narrow for three adults. Optional buckets hold driver in place better. Outboard front safety belts anchor to seat--easy to reach, always a comfortable fit.
Room/Comfort (rear)

Base Ultra w/Gran Touring Pkg. Class Average
6 6 5.9

Roomy for two adults and more spacious than in LeSabre, Buick's other full-size sedan. Still, three's a squeeze, and a firmer cushion would increase long-distance comfort.
Cargo Room

Base Ultra w/Gran Touring Pkg. Class Average
6 6 5.8

More than in most near-luxury cars. Enhanced by flat trunk floor and low load lip.
Value within Class

Base Ultra w/Gran Touring Pkg. Class Average
7 7 7

In a class dominated by imports, Park Avenue gives up some prestige in exchange for traditional American room, power, and amenities at a competitive price.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests a vehicle's worthiness in front- and side-impact collisions and rates its resistance to rollovers. Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.
