ACCELERATION

V8 models are so smooth and strong at all speeds we see little need to opt for the much pricier V12 version.
FUEL ECONOMY
| 740i | 740iL | 750iL | Class Average |

Predictably poor. Test 750iL averaged just 13.2 mpg despite mostly highway driving. Test 740iL logged 16.5. All require premium fuel.
RIDE QUALITY

Among the world's best, aided by long wheelbases, sophisticated suspension, and high weight. Firmer Sport Package option doesn't hurt ride comfort much despite massive low-profile tires.
STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING

Surprisingly agile for big sedans, with responsive steering and only modest body lean. Sharper still with Sport Package. All make hard stops with little dive and commendable swiftness considering their ample heft.
QUIETNESS
| 740i | 740iL | 750iL | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 | 8 | 9 | 7.8 |
Lexus LS 430 has slightly less engine and wind noise, but these BMWs are serene cruisers. Sport Package adds tire noise.
CONTROLS
| 740i | 740iL | 750iL | Class Average |

| 5 | 5 | 5 | 5.6 |
Lots of gadgets, so lots of controls. Most work well, but not the navigation system and combined climate/audio/cell phone, both of which can be confusing distractions. Cabin appointments impressive.
ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)
| 740i | 740iL | 750iL | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9 | 9 | 9 | 7.7 |
Supportive power seats adjust 14 or 18 ways depending on model. Head room not vast, but generous leg, knee, and elbow space. Drivers enjoy ample adjustments, good all-around visibility.
ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)
| 740i | 740iL | 750iL | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 | 9 | 9 | 6.9 |
Just wide enough for three adults. Good head room too. Longer iL models have limo-like leg room. Easy entry/exit.
CARGO ROOM
| 740i | 740iL | 750iL | Class Average |

Trunk isn't huge, but the available space is all usable, nicely finished.

Great performance and craftsmanship don't come cheap, but the biggest BMWs rank among the world's best high-luxury sedans. Note that this current basic design will be replaced by all-new 2002 models that promise more performance and features.
