2001 BMW 3-Series Review
BMW's least expensive line gets new engines and new badging for 2001. A revised 2.5-liter inline-6 turns last year's 323 models into 325i sedans and wagons and 325Ci coupes and convertibles. Similarly, a 3.0-liter six replaces a 2.8 to transform 328s into 330i and 330Ci models. Also new is an all-wheel-drive option that creates a 325xi sedan and wagon and 330xi sedan. Topping the line, the high-performance M3 coupe and convertible have 90 hp more than their predecessors. M3s come only with 6-speed manual transmission; others offer a 5-speed manual or optional 5-speed automatic. Front head-protecting tubular airbags are standard except in convertibles. Front torso side airbags are standard on all; rear side airbags are optional for sedans, M3s, and wagons. Optional on M3s and wagons is a rear obstacle warning system, and 330i models now have the sport suspension as standard.
Competition
This hotly contested segment has a clear benchmark; it is the Acura TL (and its 2-door cousin Acura CL). The TL succeeds in blending comfort, style, luxury, and sport into an efficient package at an affordable price. If you are leaning more toward the luxury scale, the Lexus ES 300 might be a more practical purchase. We also recommend the sporty and Euro-flavored Audi A6, the comfortable Buick Park Avenue, the affordable and fast Infiniti I30.
News
BMW's best-seller line has been selling better than ever, with year-to-year U.S. deliveries up 27 percent in calendar 2000. But though all 3-Series models have now been redesigned and "re-engined," BMW is working on new variations. Among them are a stripped-down M3 coupe with a rumored 380 hp and a U.S. debut by early 2002. It's aimed at Mercedes' forthcoming C32 AMG performance sedan, but also Porsche's 911. Assuming it's sold here, the racing-oriented M3 will be a pricey limited edition. Also mooted is a regular-tune M3 Sportwagon, but that one seems a long-shot for U.S. sale. Not so the "X3", a kind of junior X5 sport-utility that's being designed as a heavily modified 3-Series wagon instead of using an all-new platform. BMW has confirmed this "crossover" for U.S. sale as a 2003 model; we expect it by mid-2002. X3 will be sourced from Germany, though with a drive system much like that of the American-built X5. On sale in Europe is a new-design 3-Series Compact, a successor to the old-style 318ti 2-dr hatchback that never caught on in the U.S. BMW recently said the new one won't be coming here, but that could change if Mercedes' new C230K Sport Coupe, another a 4-cyl hatchback, catches fire. Further out is the much-discussed 1-Series, an all-new 4-cyl BMW that's smaller and more affordable than even the least expensive 3-Series. BMW recently reversed itself by announcing that the 1 will be sold in America as well as Europe. It should come here during 2004, perhaps as an '05 entry. Latest word is that the 1 will bow as a 4-door sedan, but a 4-dr wagon, 2-dr hatch and perhaps even a convertible will reportedly be added later. All will hew to BMW tradition by having rear-wheel drive, not front-drive as previously thought. Engines will likely comprise BMW's new British-built 1.6-liter and/or 2.0-liter 4-cyl units. Both have the company's Valvetronic variable-valve-timing system that Americans see first in the redesigned 2002 7-Series flagship sedans.

Acceleration

325i, auto. 330i, auto. 330i w/Sport Pkg., man. 330xi w/nav. sys., man. Class Average
6 7 7 7 5.6

Lively in any form, especially with manual transmission. M3 is ferociously fast. BMW says rear-drive 330s do 0-60 in 7 sec with automatic, 6.4 with manual. We timed a manual 330xi sedan at 6.8 sec 0-60 mph, an automatic 325i sedan at 8.1.
Fuel Economy

325i, auto. 330i, auto. 330i w/Sport Pkg., man. 330xi w/nav. sys., man. Class Average
6 5 6 5 5.4

A test 325xi averaged 24 mpg, a 330i 25.4, and a 330xi 20.8; all had manual transmission and benefited from lots of highway travel. With automatic transmission, test 325i sedan returned 19.7 mpg in hard driving, a 325Ci convertible 16.2. All require premium gas.
Ride Quality

325i, auto. 330i, auto. 330i w/Sport Pkg., man. 330xi w/nav. sys., man. Class Average
7 7 5 7 5.3

Standard-suspension is a paragon of firm but comfortable composure regardless of body style. Available Sport Packages score style points, but turn the ride choppy and increase tire noise on all but unblemished roads, so try before you spend the extra dough. M3 is a bit harsher still.
Steering/Handling/Braking

325i, auto. 330i, auto. 330i w/Sport Pkg., man. 330xi w/nav. sys., man. Class Average
7 7 8 8 6.6

Still the class benchmark for agile fun. Standard antiskid system and available AWD add to safety, but rear-drive models have mediocre traction in snow with base tires and lack grip on wet roads with sport treads. Standard ABS and large 4-wheel disc brakes stop with swift, stable assurance.
Quietness

325i, auto. 330i, auto. 330i w/Sport Pkg., man. 330xi w/nav. sys., man. Class Average
7 6 5 6 5.2

Convertibles suffer the most wind rush, M3s the most tire roar, but all 3s are mechanically refined and pretty quiet overall.
Controls

325i, auto. 330i, auto. 330i w/Sport Pkg., man. 330xi w/nav. sys., man. Class Average
7 7 7 5 6.5

Well-arranged dashboard and standard steering-wheel audio and cruise controls ease driving. Navigation system a chore to program. Standard cabin materials not as posh as in many class rivals, and leather is optional on most models, though BMW at midyear made cruise control and some other basic amenities standard on the 325i--long overdue on a $27,000-plus car.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

325i, auto. 330i, auto. 330i w/Sport Pkg., man. 330xi w/nav. sys., man. Class Average
6 6 6 6 5.7

Upright cabin seems narrow, but isn't cramped. Leg room is plentiful. Standard tilt/telescope steering wheel helps driver comfort, but tester complaints included subpar lumbar support and tight headroom for the very tall. Visibility fine except top-up in convertibles.
Room/Comfort (rear)

325i, auto. 330i, auto. 330i w/Sport Pkg., man. 330xi w/nav. sys., man. Class Average
3 3 3 3 3.5

Knee and foot space just OK in 4-doors with a front seat set fully aft. Much less room and trickier entry/exit in 2-doors.
Cargo Room

325i, auto. 330i, auto. 330i w/Sport Pkg., man. 330xi w/nav. sys., man. Class Average
2 2 2 2 3.5

Decent in sedans, less so in 2-doors; wagons have scarcely more cargo space than sedans without folding the back seats.
Value within Class

325i, auto. 330i, auto. 330i w/Sport Pkg., man. 330xi w/nav. sys., man. Class Average
7 7 8 7 4

Still the class choice for driving enthusiasts. Some competitors deliver more room and standard features for less money, but none is more refined or dynamically capable. Resale values are strong, too.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.
NA = price note available, NC = no charge.
