ACCELERATION
| Base conv 2WD | 225-hp cpe | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | 7 | 7.7 |
Slight turbo lag dulls performance in most situations, though the 225-hp model scoots impressively once boost is up. Our test 180-hp coupe did 0-60 mph in 7.4 secs. A 225-hp Quattro coupe took 6.2 secs., a swift but not scorching time.
FUEL ECONOMY
| Base conv 2WD | 225-hp cpe | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 7 | 6 | 4.7 |
TT's require premium gas. Test front-drive models averaged 25.3-29.8 mpg, the 225-hp Quattro coupe 19.1.
RIDE QUALITY
| Base conv 2WD | 225-hp cpe | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | 2 | 3.5 |
Firm damping, so TTs jolt over potholes and tar strips and jiggle a bit on freeways. Still, not uncomfortable for a sports car.
STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING
| Base conv 2WD | 225-hp cpe | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 7 | 9 | 7.8 |
Great twisty-road runner, aided by precise steering, minimal body lean, strong grip (Quattros especially) and near fail-safe braking. Available wider tires follow grooves too readily, though.
QUIETNESS
| Base conv 2WD | 225-hp cpe | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | 2 | 3.6 |
Prominent exhaust noise, marked tire roar on some surfaces. Convertible's power retractable glass windbreak reduces top-down cockpit turbulence at higher speed, but it's still noisier than coupe.
CONTROLS
| Base conv 2WD | 225-hp cpe | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | 6 | 5.2 |
Design and layout imaginative yet user-friendly, but alloy shift knob can be too hot--or too cold--to handle. Cabin materials are delightfully stylish and of high quality.
ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)
| Base conv 2WD | 225-hp cpe | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | 3 | 5 |
Narrow footwells, but no shortage of head clearance for up to 6-footers. Low body build impedes entry/exit but not driver positioning or visibility, though vision not great top-up in convertible.
ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)
| Base conv 2WD | 225-hp cpe | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | 1 | .7 |
Only coupes have a rear seat, and it's little more than a padded cubby, not even fit for toddlers.
CARGO ROOM
| Base conv 2WD | 225-hp cpe | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 6 | 2.1 |
Coupes stow a couple's weekend luggage even with the split rear seatbacks up. Convertible's trunk is teensy. High liftover in all TTs.
VALUE WITHIN CLASS
| Base conv 2WD | 225-hp cpe | Class Average |
|---|---|---|

There are less expensive rivals that perform as well, but for solidity, style, and features, TTs rival sports cars costing thousands more, with quattro an ace in the hole.
