2001 Audi A8 Review
Audi's flagship line includes the A8, high-performance S8, and the longer-body A8L. A8 and A8L have 310 hp, the S8 360. All models have V8 power, 5-speed automatic transmission, Audi's quattro all-wheel drive, four side airbags, side-curtain airbags, aluminum-intensive construction, and now a longer 4-yr./50,000-mi. warranty (vs. 3/50,000). Navigation system, heated front/rear seats, and rear sunshades are standard on L, optional on base and S8. Optional Acoustic Parking System now warns of obstacles front and rear. S8 has sport suspension, 18-inch wheels instead of 17s, special trim, and power sport front seats.
Competition
This diverse segment offers the widest price range. It covers everything from the $34,000 Saab 9-5 to the $130,000 Mercedes-Benz SL500. Obviously our Best Buys are somewhere in between. We think that the Acura RL is a steal at $42,000 fully equipped. Though it is a front-drive V6 in a field of V8 rear-drive models, it has a great ride, plenty of power, and is quite luxurious. Mercedes-Benz E-Class, though a bit long in the tooth, also continues to impress with its impeccable road manners and luxurious comfort.

If you are looking for something a bit more sporting we recommend the BMW 5-Series. If your taste ranges more toward the luxury end, then take a look at the Cadillac DeVille or Lexus GS 300.
News
A8 remains a slow-seller, with just 2362 retailed during all of 2000, a near 5-percent decline from '99. As ever, Audi's aluminum-intensive flagship is at a price disadvantage against class rivals, and Audi still isn't widely viewed as a "high-luxury" brand like BMW, Lexus or Mercedes, though it's gaining more credibility all the time.

A further image boost may well come from the second-generation A8 that's on track for a U.S. launch in late 2002 as an '03 model. Audi's ASF (aluminum space-frame) construction is retained, but with improvements to make the car lighter, stronger and cheaper to build. To go with it, Audi is developing a lighter quattro all-wheel-drive system with reduced internal friction for better performance and mileage.

Standard and long-wheelbase models will continue, but engines will be completely different, the next A8 being the first Audi to adopt Volkswagen Group's new family of W-configuration engines. The mainstay powerplant will be a W8 with a reported 300 hp from 3.7 liters. A 6.0-liter W12 will make some 420 hp in an ultra-luxury challenger to the V12 Mercedes S600 and BMW 7-Series. Both engines are all-aluminum multivalve designs derived from VW's narrow-angle VR engine family. The W8 will also be offered in VW's own midrange Passat, which should reach U.S. dealers by the middle of '02. Automatic transmission will remain standard in the new A8s, but may have six forward gears instead of the present five.

Styling will be evolutionary so as not to make today's A8s seem suddenly obsolete and thus depress resale values. This mimics the approach taken with Audi's new-generation A4 models. A high-performance S8 will likely be added soon after the regular models go on sale.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

Base A8L S8 Class Average
7 7 8 6.4

Test A8L clocked 7.1 sec 0-60 mph, good for a big, heavy sedan. Our test S8 needed just 6.4 sec. All models offer strong midrange punch, aided by silky, responsive automatic transmission.
Fuel Economy

Base A8L S8 Class Average
5 5 3 4.3

Consistent with EPA ratings and above average for the class. Test A8s averaged 19-20 mpg. One test S8 did 14.8, a second example 15.1. All require premium fuel.
Ride Quality

Base A8L S8 Class Average
8 8 8 7.7

These big Audis smother bumps as well as other German luxury cars, so they're very easy riders. S8's sport suspension and high-speed tires deliver a firmer but still comfortable ride.
Steering/Handling/Braking

Base A8L S8 Class Average
6 6 7 6.1

A8s aren't quite BMW-nimble, but are plenty grippy and predictable with class-exclusive AWD. S8 matches any rival for athletic handling. All feel better planted at high speed than some competitors and have powerful, effective brakes.
Quietness

Base A8L S8 Class Average
8 8 7 7.8

Always hushed except for mild tire drone on coarse pavement.
Controls

Base A8L S8 Class Average
5 5 5 5.6

Mostly good, but Audi's navigation system is more cryptic than most, lacks video-type display; complex climate controls sit too low. Steering wheel buttons control manual shifting of auto trans, plus audio and phone functions. Interior ambiance befits premium pricing, but one test S8 had a mild, persistent creaking noise in its driver's door.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

Base A8L S8 Class Average
8 8 8 7.7

Enough space for very tall occupants on firm bucket seats, though lateral bolstering mediocre on A8/A8L. Drivers have ample position adjustments, generally clear sightlines.
Room/Comfort (rear)

Base A8L S8 Class Average
8 10 8 6.9

A8/S8 are shy on rear leg room and seat width versus BMW 7-Series and Mercedes S-Class, but A8L, which accounts for 85 percent of A8 line's sales, is more than a match.
Cargo Room

Base A8L S8 Class Average
6 6 6 4.5

Ample despite bulky side panels. Plenty of in-cabin stowage too, though dashboard glovebox is small.
Value within Class

Base A8L S8 Class Average
3 4 3 4.9

Very satisfying but costly, due to high-tech aluminum construction. Other big premium sedans offer better dollar value, though none yet offer AWD.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

Front Impact, Passenger 5 NA
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests a vehicle's worthiness in front- and side-impact collisions and rates its resistance to rollovers. Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.
