A6 2.8s feel a bit sleepy off the line, but go well enough with heavy use of the accelerator. Test 2.7T and 4.2 both ran 0-60 mph in about 7 sec. Allroad needed just under 8 sec.

We've averaged 19.2-22.4 mpg with 2.8 models, 18.4 with a 4.2, and, helped by lots of highway work, 22.0 with a manual-transmission 2.7T. Test allroads averaged 15.1-17.2, depending on conditions.

The 2.8s and 4.2 telegraph small bumps but are otherwise comfortable. Allroad is softer and more absorbent. The 2.7T is thumpy, fidgety on broken pavement.

All A6s have firm, communicative steering, fine straight-line stability, great cornering poise and grip, plus strong, consistent braking. Allroad leans the most in turns, but not that much, especially vs. most real SUVs.
QUIETNESS

Low wind noise, but tires thump and whine. V6s a bit growly at high revs for this price range. The V8 is always a quiet smoothie.

Complex, low-set climate controls distract, but most everything else is handy and intuitive. Available navigation system is simpler than most, displays directions only within instrument cluster. Cabin materials stylishly tasteful, workmanship thorough.

Excellent head and leg room. A6 beats rival BMW 5-Series for total usable cabin space. Fine driving stance abetted by standard tilt wheel and power seat. Visibility clear all-round, especially in wagons.

A6s are less expensive than comparable BMW 5-series and Mercedes E-Class models yet have similar Teutonic solidity, driving feel, and class. We strongly recommend them. Highly capable allroad not dramatically costlier than slower 2.8 Avant.
