2001 Audi A4 Review
A redesigned 2002 A4 bows this fall with new styling and an available 220-hp 3.0-liter V6. Meanwhile, Audi's lowest-priced line finishes its 2001 run with sedans and Avant wagons in turbo-4-cyl 1.8T form, V6 2.8 models, and high-performance twin-turbo V6 S4 versions. Audi's Quattro all-wheel drive is standard on Avants and S4s, optional on the others in place of front-wheel drive with traction control. All offer manual or automatic transmission and have standard curtain side airbags. All but 1.8T offer a navigation system.
Competition
This hotly contested segment has a clear benchmark; it is the Acura TL (and its 2-door cousin Acura CL). The TL succeeds in blending comfort, style, luxury, and sport into an efficient package at an affordable price. If you are leaning more toward the luxury scale, the Lexus ES 300 might be a more practical purchase.

We also recommend the sporty and Euro-flavored Audi A6, the comfortable Buick Park Avenue, the affordable and fast Infiniti I30.
News
Despite intramural competition from big-sister A6, the A4 remained Audi's volume seller in calendar 2000, helped by a 7-percent year-over-year increase to near 34,500 units. Just around the corner are new second-generation models that are slightly larger and more rigid, have more room and power, and look rather like the A6. Wheelbase expands to 104.3 inches, overall length by 2.7, width by 1.3, and overall height by half an inch. Audi claims 1.7 inches more rear knee room and 2 cu. ft. more sedan trunk space. Suspension is modified slightly and now made largely of aluminum to save weight and improve handling response.

Per usual German practice, the new A4 line rolls out in stages. Sedans arrive this summer, followed within weeks by Avant wagons, all as 2002 entries. Most will have standard quattro all-wheel drive, but a price-leader front-drive sedan should continue. New high-performance S4 versions should reach dealers by spring 2002 as early '03s. Like the 2001 models, the '02s will have standard curtain and front side airbags; rear side airbags are optional in Europe and may also be offered here, perhaps as standard on S4s at least.

Engine choices stay basically as is, but not the engines themselves. The base 1.8-liter turbo 4-cyl should add 20 hp for 170 total, while the current iron-block 2.8 V6 gives way to a new-design all-aluminum 3.0-liter with multivalve cylinder heads, variable valve timing and about 220 hp in U.S. trim. Audi hasn't confirmed S4 power, but it will doubtless be a twin-turbo version of this V6 with around 300 hp, according to European sources.

Audi also hadn't yet confirmed transmission choices, but a 5-speed manual should remain standard for regular A4s, with a 6-speed unit again reserved for S4s, though that may be optional for lesser models. A conventional 5-speed automatic with manual shift feature should remain optional, but U.S. A4s may get Audi's new "Multitronic" continuously-variable transmission (CVT) in lieu of that or as an extra-cost alternative. Already available in Europe, Multitronic follows other CVTs in using a system of belts and pulleys to provide an infinite number of gear ratios. Audi's design also allows sequential manual shifts through six forward "speeds" via the floor lever or steering-wheel buttons.

Further out, a 2-dr four-seat A4 convertible will reportedly bow sometime in 2002. It'll be a spiritual successor to the Cabriolet based on the old 80/80-series that was phased out a few seasons back, as well as a running mate for the small TT convertible. A companion A4 coupe should follow in 2003, also with seating for four. Audi is still mulling a derivative coupe-like 4-dr hatchback, but that wouldn't appear until 2004 at the earliest. With hatchback cars lately generating renewed interest among a small segment of American buyers, this "4-dr coupe" has some chance of joining Audi's U.S. fleet.

S4 is the only real speedster in this lineup: 0-60 mph in 6.3 sec in our test. The automatic-transmission 2.8 Quattro did 0-60 in 9.3 sec; 1.8Ts are about that quick with manual, but less lively with automatic.
Fuel Economy

Test 2.8 V6 Quattros averaged 17.5-21.5 mpg, 1.8T Quattros around 23, S4s about 20. All require premium fuel.

Supple and controlled with the base chassis, a tad harsh with the firmer damping in the optional Sport package and on S4s.

1.8T sdn, man. 1.8T Avant wgn, auto. 2.8 sdn w/Quattro, auto. S4 sdn, man. Class Average
6 6 7 8 6.6

Sporty and fun, with modest body lean and firm, quick steering. Grip good with front drive, terrific on Quattros and S4s. Brakes touchy on some of our test models, but all A4s stop short and straight.
Quietness

1.8T sdn, man. 1.8T Avant wgn, auto. 2.8 sdn w/Quattro, auto. S4 sdn, man. Class Average
5 5 6 4 5.2

Available performance tires noisy on rough pavement. Turbo-4 engine growly at high revs; V6s are muted.
Controls

1.8T sdn, man. 1.8T Avant wgn, auto. 2.8 sdn w/Quattro, auto. S4 sdn, man. Class Average
7 7 7 7 6.5

Complex climate controls mounted too low, available navigation system hard to use. No complaints otherwise. Interior materials and workmanship are delightfully sophisticated.

6 6 6 6 5.7

Plenty of leg room and head clearance. Standard seats supportive, but sport versions border on too firm. V6 models' standard power seat helps tailor a good basic driving stance. No-sweat overall visibility.

Too narrow for three adults. Leg space limited with front seats pushed back. Sunroof steals valuable head room.

OK in sedans, but wagons not that spacious. All models have usefully shaped flat-floor compartments.

Aged design has no surplus of cabin space, but current A4s match rivals in most ways, and warranty includes free scheduled maintenance.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

NHTSA Crash-Test Results
Test Audi A4 4-door sedan Audi A4 4-door wagon
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests a vehicle's worthiness in front- and side-impact collisions and rates its resistance to rollovers. Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.
