ACCELERATION

LS hatch, man. GS sdn, auto. GS-R hatch, man. Type R Class Average
5 5 6 7 5.7

Relatively weak low-end torque means labored passing with automatic transmission. Snappy takeoffs, though, and much livelier with manual transmission. In tests of manual-transmission coupes, an LS did 0-60 mph in 8.3 secs., a GS-R in 7.6.

FUEL ECONOMY

LS hatch, man. GS sdn, auto. GS-R hatch, man. Type R Class Average
7 7 7 7 6.1

Thrifty for the available performance. Our test LS averaged nearly 25 mpg, our GS-R a laudable 28.3. Expect 2-3 mpg less overall with automatic.

RIDE QUALITY

LS hatch, man. GS sdn, auto. GS-R hatch, man. Type R Class Average
3 4 3 2 3.5

Definitely firm but mostly comfortable. Coupes jiggle more than sedans on small bumps and washboards, the taut Type R especially.

STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING

LS hatch, man. GS sdn, auto. GS-R hatch, man. Type R Class Average
7 6 7 8 6.8

Near go-kart agility allied to safe, predictable front-wheel-drive moves. Coupes lean a bit less than sedans in tight corners. Braking swift and assured with standard ABS 4-wheel discs.

QUIETNESS

LS hatch, man. GS sdn, auto. GS-R hatch, man. Type R Class Average
3 4 3 2 3.2

"Short" gearing and rev-happy engines mean marked mechanical noise except in gentle driving. Tire thrum also high except on glassy surfaces.

CONTROLS

LS hatch, man. GS sdn, auto. GS-R hatch, man. Type R Class Average
8 8 8 8 5.6

Clear, concise, handy: Typical of Honda-designed interiors and hard to fault. Materials are sturdy and sensible rather than luxurious.

ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)

LS hatch, man. GS sdn, auto. GS-R hatch, man. Type R Class Average
4 5 4 4 4.3

Low, sporty positioning, but roomy and comfortable enough for long hauls. Tall riders have limited head space, though. Fine visibility, though slightly restricted aft in coupes.

ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)

LS hatch, man. GS sdn, auto. GS-R hatch, man. Type R Class Average
2 3 2 2 1.5

Cozy in sedans, even tighter in coupes, and entry/exit not that easy either way. OK for medium adults, though.

CARGO ROOM

LS hatch, man. GS sdn, auto. GS-R hatch, man. Type R Class Average
3 2 3 3 3

Nothing special. Coupes' hatchback versatility is a plus, but not their awkwardly high liftover.

VALUE WITHIN CLASS

LS hatch, man. GS sdn, auto. GS-R hatch, man. Type R Class Average
4 4 4 3 4.6

A premium small car offering high driver appeal, solid resale values, and Acura's extensive warranty and customer service. Lacks side airbags and other features of newer rivals, and rather noisy for what it costs, but discounts should be available on this lame duck.
