2000 Volkswagen EuroVan Full Review
Date Published: 7/31/08
2000 Volkswagen EuroVan Review
Available middle-row bucket seats for the mainstream passenger model marks the primary EuroVan addition for 2000.

EuroVan comes as the mainstream GLS passenger model and recreation-oriented MV (MultiVan), plus a Camper model on an extended wheelbase. All have a single right-side sliding door, V6 engine, automatic transmission, and antilock 4-wheel disc brakes.

The GLS and MV seat seven, with the GLS using a middle-row bench or, for 2000, a pair of optional buckets. The MV's middle-row buckets face rearward. Both have a folding third-row bench; the MV's converts to a bed. Standard on the Camper and optional on MV is a "pop-top" roof incorporating a 2-person bed. The Camper adds refrigerator, sink, stove, and other gear. Other 2000 additions include rear-seat reading lights, tinted rear glass, and remote central locking.
Competition
Chrysler started the minivan trend back in 1984, and they remain one of our Best Buys today. Though the competition has heated up, we still feel that the Dodge Caravan and Chrysler Voyager are two of the best you can buy. They offer all of the creature comforts in a pleasing package at a fair price. Our other Best Buy is the Honda Odyssey. It's a little bit smaller than the Chryslers, but more sporty to drive, and it has a super-convenient flip-and-fold-away rear seat.

Trailing at a close second are the Recommended Chevy Venture and Ford Windstar. Though these vans are comparably priced and offer loads of neat features, we feel they can't match the road manners of our Best Buys.

News
With fewer than 3400 sales in all of 1999, this dated minivan doesn't register on buyer radar screens, appealing instead to a handful of iconoclasts who still remember the rear-engine Microbus and Vanagon of old. EuroVan will reportedly be redesigned for the 2002 model year--the model's first complete overhaul since its early-1990s debut--but that's probably for Europe. VW has been doing so well with other models in the U.S. that the next EuroVan might well be delayed in reaching this market or even dropped altogether.

The present EuroVan is basically a civilian version of VW's lightest European commercial vehicle, but the company does sell a more conventional minivan over there. Called Sharan, it's a front-drive VW design produced since the mid-'90s in cooperation with Ford, which sells its own version as the Galaxy. The present "Sharalaxy" is about the size of Honda's original Odyssey, which some analysts say makes it too small for most U.S. buyers. However, a new and possibly larger Sharan is due in 3-4 years, and VW may be planning it with an eye to U.S. sales.

More intriguing by far, VW is reported to be studying a new Microbus as another nostalgia wagon a la New Beetle. It's almost a no-brainer idea. After all, the neo-Bug has not only been popular itself but has helped boost sales of VW's other U.S. models, not to mention working magic for the brand's image. A "New Bus" would presumably keep the good vibes flowing. The one major problem with recreating the Microbus is passing U.S. crash tests, which require a certain amount of impact-absorbing front sheetmetal; the original rear-engine design put front occupants over the front wheels with almost no "crush space" ahead. Not that a New Bus wouldn't be a line-for-line copy anyway. Like the New Beetle, its styling would only reinterpret the original look, hopefully with the same winning results. And, of course, the mechanical and interior packages would be bang up to date. Dealers are already salivating at the prospect, but it remains to be seen whether VW can revive The Box like it did The Bug. If it can, you can forget the EuroVan, though most observers say a New Bus is at least five years away.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

GLS MV Class Average
2 2 3.6

A test MV ambled 0-60 mph in 12.2 seconds--and that's without a load. The V6 feels overmatched in quick passing attempts, when the automatic usually downshifts with a jolt and a lunge.
Fuel Economy

GLS MV Class Average
4 4 3.9

The high weight-to-power ratio that produces sluggish performance also hurts mileage. We've averaged between 11.7 and 16.0 mpg, depending on driving conditions.
Ride Quality

GLS MV Class Average
4 4 4.9

Rapid wheel patter occurs over freeway expansion joints, and even minor dips and humps cause languid "motorboat" pitching. EuroVan rides over minor bumps rather than really absorbing them.
Steering/Handling/Braking

GLS MV Class Average
3 3 4.3

Cornering is front-drive predictable, but grip isn't that strong, and tight turns demand slowing down a lot, as queasy, tipsy-feeling body lean sets in early.
Quietness

GLS MV Class Average
3 3 4.5

Noisy even in gentle cruising, with marked body drumming and tire roar on coarse pavement and loud body rumble on lane-divider dots. Noticeable wind rush at speed, plus audible engine drone.
Controls

GLS MV Class Average
3 3 5.7

Typical VW design and placement. Gauges and most warning lights are obvious, but some switches could mystify those not familiar with the brand.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

GLS MV Class Average
6 6 6

Bountiful space, plus firm but rather flat seat cushions. Very narrow door sills and intrusive windshield posts force tall persons into a twisted crouch to avoid banged heads on entry.
Room/Comfort (rear)

GLS MV Class Average
8 10 6.4

There's enough for three medium adults on the third-row bench, but the MV's rear-facing center seats are fixed, and last-row leg space is limited in the people-toting GLS.
Cargo Room

GLS MV Class Average
10 10 9.3

Being tall pays off here, with 19 cubic feet alone behind the third seat. Too bad you need a wrench to remove the second- and third-row seats, and the large tailgate is clumsy.
Value within Class

GLS MV Class Average
2 2 5.8

Subpar acceleration, quirky handling behavior, and a relatively steep price limit EuroVan's appeal to those to value the subtle allure of its mature decor and intelligent use of interior space.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.
