Vehicle Highlights

Cabrio, which is still based on the 1994-98 Golf/Jetta platform, continues into 2000 with a brake-wear indicator as its main addition. Last year, VW freshened the interior and exterior styling. For 2000, an in-dash CD player is newly optional, the ignition key is now anti-theft coded, and a dashboard warning light illuminates when the brakes might need to be serviced.

Base GL and upscale GLS models return, both with a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine and a 5-speed manual or optional 4-speed automatic transmission. Antilock brakes and front side airbags are standard on both models. Cabrio's folding top has a glass rear window and electric defroster; the GLS's roof is power operated. A fixed bar over the interior enhances structural rigidity and provides some protection in a rollover accident. GLS models also have power windows, fog lamps, heated/power side mirrors, alloy wheels, cruise control, heated front seats, and leather seating surfaces.

COMPETITION

The performance leader in this group is also our Best Buy. The Honda Prelude will hustle two large adults and their luggage in comfort and luxury to a weekend getaway. Prelude has plenty of power, excellent road manners, and gets reasonable fuel economy.

We also recommend you take a look at the Chrysler Sebring (which will be redesigned for 2001 in coupe, convertible, and sedan form) and the Volkswagen New Beetle. The Sebring offers the most room in this class, while the New Beetle has interesting styling and a nice mix of comfort, performance, and economy.
