ACCELERATION

SR5 Access Cab 2WD, V8 Limited Access Cab 4WD, V8 Class Average
5 5 4.9

Toyota claims a 0-60-mph time of about 8.0 seconds for the 2WD V8 regular-cab Tundra. Our test 4WD Access Cab clocked 8.8 seconds 0-60 mph. We have not tested a V6 model.

FUEL ECONOMY

SR5 Access Cab 2WD, V8 Limited Access Cab 4WD, V8 Class Average
2 2 1.7

Our test 4WD Access Cab averaged 12.3 mpg; a second example returned 13.6 mpg. That's similar to comparable domestics in our tests. Toyota recommends premium fuel for Tundra's V8.

RIDE QUALITY

SR5 Access Cab 2WD, V8 Limited Access Cab 4WD, V8 Class Average
4 4 3.4

Tundra rides more comfortably than rivals with similar wheelbases, though it's still very much a truck, so the stiff suspension triggers abrupt vertical motions on uneven surfaces.

STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING

SR5 Access Cab 2WD, V8 Limited Access Cab 4WD, V8 Class Average
4 4 3.4

Tundra handles with above-average balance, and its tail resists skipping in bumpy turns. But as with most full-size pickups, it suffers lots of body lean in corners, and, on 4WD versions, slow, numb steering.

QUIETNESS

SR5 Access Cab 2WD, V8 Limited Access Cab 4WD, V8 Class Average
6 6 4.4

Noise levels are nearly carlike--particularly from the smooth-running V8.

CONTROLS

SR5 Access Cab 2WD, V8 Limited Access Cab 4WD, V8 Class Average
7 7 6.6

Clear and simple, but the column-mounted automatic-transmission lever is close to the windshield-wiper stalk, so changing gears can trigger the wipers via an errant sleeve or wrist.

ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)

SR5 Access Cab 2WD, V8 Limited Access Cab 4WD, V8 Class Average
8 8 8

Room and comfort for two is as good as most full-size pickups. But Tundra's cab doesn't feel quite as expansive as the domestics, so there's not much room for a middle rider on the bench seat.

ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)

SR5 Access Cab 2WD, V8 Limited Access Cab 4WD, V8 Class Average
3 3 2.4

The Access Cab's rear seatback is uncomfortably upright and there's little leg room; it's more cramped than any of the extended-cab domestics.

CARGO ROOM

SR5 Access Cab 2WD, V8 Limited Access Cab 4WD, V8 Class Average
4 4 3.4

In-cab storage is okay, with a big console bin and decent map pockets.

VALUE WITHIN CLASS

SR5 Access Cab 2WD, V8 Limited Access Cab 4WD, V8 Class Average
7 7 6.6

With an annual production capacity of around 100,000, Tundra isn't a threat to overtake Ford, GM, or Dodge in sales. But it's a fine truck, priced competitively and executed with typical Toyota thoroughness. Except for rear-seat comfort, it's a match for any comparably equipped domestic.
