ACCELERATION
| Base | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 5 | 4.4 |
Enough muscle to go 0-60 mph in 9 seconds for our tests. The transmission helps with prompt, smooth shifts.
FUEL ECONOMY
| Base | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 2 | 2 |
Our test LX 470 returned 15.4 mpg with lots of highway driving, but the 12.3 mpg of our test Land Cruiser is a more realistic overall average. Premium fuel is recommended.
RIDE QUALITY
| Base | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 8 | 5.8 |
Land Cruiser shrugs off most road imperfections with firm isolation. The LX 470's adjustable suspension seems either wallowy soft or jittery taut; we prefer the basic Toyota setup.
STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING
| Base | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 4 | 3.5 |
Arguably the most refined big SUVs; they feel stable and secure in fast turns, despite noticeable body lean and a slight tipsy feel. We have not yet tested the new antiskid system.
QUIETNESS
| Base | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 8 | 6.1 |
Luxury-car grade sound deadening and silken engines make these wagons quieter than most passenger sedans, not to mention virtually all truck-based SUVs.
CONTROLS
| Base | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 7 | 5.4 |
The user-friendly dashboard is common to both vehicles, and we especially like the simple rotary climate controls, though a few other switches are obscured.
ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)
| Base | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 8 | 8.3 |
Few vehicles of any type are this roomy or comfortable.
ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)
| Base | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 8 | 7.7 |
Wide enough for 3-across adult seating, and a flat floor insures a high level of comfort for all. Step-up is tall, however, and the narrow running boards don't help much.
CARGO ROOM
| Base | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 8 | 8.1 |
As roomy as any similar wagon--without the third-row seating. With it, cargo room is rather tight, although the split bench folds up to the sides and can be removed.
VALUE WITHIN CLASS
| Base | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 5 | 3 |
Land Cruiser isn't cheap, and the lush Lexus version costs even more. Superior customer service and a longer warranty are the latter's only tangible advantages over the Toyota. Some SUVs offer more metal for less money, but Land Cruiser and LX 470 are highly capable off-road, as quick and comfortable as any rival on-road, and built better than most. Land Cruiser gets our Recommended nod.
