2000 Toyota Celica Full Review
Date Published: 7/31/08
2000 Toyota Celica Review
Toyota's sporty coupe is redesigned for 2000 with styling inspired by open-wheel race cars. No convertible is planned, but the familiar 2-door hatchback body style continues in GT and sportier GT-S models. The only engine is a 1.8-liter 4-cylinder that makes 140 horsepower in the GT and 180 in the GT-S. The GT has a standard 5-speed manual transmission, while the GT-S gets Celica's first 6-speed manual. Automatic is optional for both, with the GT-S having manual gear selection via four steering-wheel buttons.
Both models can be ordered with an external-sliding power moonroof and antilock brakes. Also available are front side airbags, a first for Celica. Standard on both models are air conditioning, tilt steering wheel, and CD player. Sixteen-inch wheels are optional in place of 15s on the GT-S, which upgrades GT equipment with standard alloy wheels instead of steel rims, rear disc brakes instead of drums, power windows and door locks, leather-rim steering wheel, fog lights, rear spoiler, and aluminum-trimmed foot pedals.
Competition
The performance leader in this group is also our Best Buy. The Honda Prelude will hustle two large adults and their luggage in comfort and luxury to a weekend getaway. Prelude has plenty of power, excellent road manners, and gets reasonable fuel economy.
We also recommend you take a look at the Chrysler Sebring (which will be redesigned for 2001 in coupe, convertible, and sedan form) and the Volkswagen New Beetle. The Sebring offers the most room in this class, while the New Beetle has interesting styling and a nice mix of comfort, performance, and economy.
News
Having just been reinvented, Celica is only beginning its latest design generation, so no fundamental changes are in store for the next 4-5 years. But Toyota needs to keep buyers interested, so we think it highly likely that Celica will get a performance-boosting turbocharger or supercharger option within the next two years. Of course, you can also expect the usual yearly styling tweaks and a "midlife" facelift around 2003.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

GT, auto. GT-S, man. Class Average
6 7 5.7

Needs lots of revs to perform well. The 6-speed GT-S is lively; the GT with automatic has adequate power except on long upgrades.
Fuel Economy

GT, auto. GT-S, man. Class Average
8 6 6.2

In our tests, a 6-speed GT-S averaged 24.2 mpg in city/highway driving on the required premium fuel. An automatic GT returned an excellent 30.3 mpg with lots of highway miles on regular gas.
Ride Quality

GT, auto. GT-S, man. Class Average
4 4 3.2

As expected of sporty cars, Celica's firm ride is busy on most surfaces and can be jiggly on closely spaced ripples, though this is more annoying than uncomfortable.
Steering/Handling/Braking

GT, auto. GT-S, man. Class Average
7 7 6.8

Agile handling and grippy cornering, aided by sharp, responsive steering.
Quietness

GT, auto. GT-S, man. Class Average
3 3 3

The engines' high-rpm nature means any Celica is noisy and wearing on a long trip. There's also excessive tire roar
Controls

GT, auto. GT-S, man. Class Average
6 6 5.4

Gauges are legible, but the tachometer is out of the driver's easy line of sight, and warning lights are scattered around the instrument cluster.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

GT, auto. GT-S, man. Class Average
3 3 4.2

Though wheelbase has grown 2.4 inches, the cabin has shrunk. Even moderately tall front occupants have limited head and leg room.
Room/Comfort (rear)

GT, auto. GT-S, man. Class Average
1 1 1.3

The back seat remains the usual sporty-car torture chamber for adults, and entry/exit is crouch-and-crawl.
Cargo Room

GT, auto. GT-S, man. Class Average
5 5 2.8

Cargo space is so-so, and there's no inside hatch release, but the new Celica does have a much lower hatch opening.
Value within Class

GT, auto. GT-S, man. Class Average
4 4 3.2

The latest Celicas have an edgy personality that young hotbloods should go for, but they're tiresomely noisy and lack sufficient low-end torque for decent scoot with automatic transmission. Acura Integras offer similar high-rpm kicks from smoother, better-sounding 4-cylinder engines, while Mitsubishi's redesigned Eclipse plays to more mature tastes with larger, quieter engines that include a V6.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

NHTSA Crash-Test Results
Test Toyota Celica 2-door hatchback
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests a vehicle's worthiness in front- and side-impact collisions and rates its resistance to rollovers. Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.

The Exhaust Emission Warranty covers corrosion-related parts for 2 years/24,000 miles, plus 8 years/80,000 miles on the catalytic converter and any on-board diagnostic device. The Passenger Restraint Warranty covers seat belts and airbags for 5 years/50,000 miles.
