2000 Toyota Avalon Review
America's only import-brand full-size sedan is redesigned for 2000. Avalon gains about an inch in body width and height, plus new styling. A 3.0-liter V6 and automatic transmission return, but variable valve timing helps add 10 horsepower, for 210. Antilock 4-wheel disc brakes and front side airbags remain standard. XL and uplevel XLS trim levels return. Newly optional for XLS is an anitskid system similar to that offered by Toyota's premium Lexus brand. It's designed to activate individual brakes to counteract skids in turns; it includes traction control, as well as a brake assist feature that automatically applies full braking force in emergency stops.
Avalon again offers front bucket seats or a split front bench. New standard features include a trunk pass-through and dual-zone temperature control. Leather upholstery, power seats, and power moonroof are among the options. New options include memory power seats and a 115-volt AC outlet for household-type plugs.
Competition
This segment has been hardest hit by the huge popularity of sport-utility vehicles. Just a few years ago there were more than 12 cars in the segment and now there are just seven. Heading up the field as Best Buys are the Chrysler Concorde and Dodge Intrepid twins. They have real room for six, exceptional road manners, and plenty of power.
Toyota's Avalon and Buick's LeSabre are twoRecommended choices. Both have room for five and offer a comfortable ride (with modest handling capabilities). If you are looking for towing ability or don't mind having a rear-drive car, then we recommend you take a look at the Ford Crown Victoria. With its rear-drive layout and body-on-frame chassis it's a dinosaur in this class, but Ford has updated it nicely over the years and it comes at a reasonable price.
News
Avalon won't see another redesign before model-year 2005 at the earliest. We've no word yet on changes for 2001, but they will likely be limited to the usual color and trim shuffles and perhaps a new feature or two.
So far, the latest Avalon is doing much better business than its predecessor, which suffered a 12-percent sales drop in calendar 1999. The new model, by contrast, scored a near 90-percent year-to-year sales gain in the first four months of 2000.
