ACCELERATION

XL w/bench seat XLS w/bucket seats Class Average
5 5 5.6

Our test car did 0-60 mph in 8.3 seconds, which is about mid-pack for the full-size class.

FUEL ECONOMY

XL w/bench seat XLS w/bucket seats Class Average
5 5 4.6

The 21 mpg average in tests is better than most like-sized sedans. Toyota recommends 91-octane fuel for Avalon.

RIDE QUALITY

XL w/bench seat XLS w/bucket seats Class Average
7 7 6.1

Comfortable and absorbent over most surfaces. Almost Lexus-like.

STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING

XL w/bench seat XLS w/bucket seats Class Average
5 5 4.9

Improved body control and firmer more communicative steering make for almost sports-sedan ability.

QUIETNESS

XL w/bench seat XLS w/bucket seats Class Average
7 7 6

Silent, except for some mild tire rumble over very coarse pavement. Even hard acceleration produces only a distant, rich-sounding engine note.

CONTROLS

XL w/bench seat XLS w/bucket seats Class Average
8 8 5.3

The steering-wheel rim can obscure the tops of the main gauges but the overall dashboard layout is good.

ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)

XL w/bench seat XLS w/bucket seats Class Average
7 8 6.9

Plenty of head and leg room for 6-footers, with comfortable supportive seats.

ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)

XL w/bench seat XLS w/bucket seats Class Average
8 8 5.8

Generous head and leg room, and the seat is wide enough for three adults, although the transmission hump limits foot room for the inboard passenger.

CARGO ROOM

XL w/bench seat XLS w/bucket seats Class Average
4 4 5.8

Cargo volume increases slightly, and the trunk, though not as long as in the old Avalon, is taller and plenty spacious.

VALUE WITHIN CLASS

XL w/bench seat XLS w/bucket seats Class Average
6 6 6.3

Toyota is loath to say this, but the new Avalon is a near-Lexus: roomier and quieter than before, just as comfortable ride-wise, yet more enjoyably roadable. If you want a spacious, posh sedan and can't quite stretch to a near-luxury model, the newest Avalon is the next best thing--and arguably the best of the full-size family 4-doors.
