ACCELERATION
| Base 2WD, 4 cyl | SR5 4WD | Limited 4WD | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 | 4 | 4 | 4.4 |
Avoid the 4-cylinder, which is too weak for 4Runner's weight. The smooth V6 delivers snappy takeoffs and ample mid-range punch, but lacks strong passing power in the heavier 4x4s.
FUEL ECONOMY
| Base 2WD, 4 cyl | SR5 4WD | Limited 4WD | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | 4 | 4 | 3.6 |
We averaged 17.2 mpg in a year-long test of a V6 Limited--and that with lots of highway miles. Our 15-mpg city average is also par for a 6-cylinder midsize SUV.
RIDE QUALITY
| Base 2WD, 4 cyl | SR5 4WD | Limited 4WD | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | 4 | 4 | 3.7 |
Not bouncy stiff, but not carlike either, especially the more firmly sprung 4x4s with their larger tires.
STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING
| Base 2WD, 4 cyl | SR5 4WD | Limited 4WD | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | 4 | 4 | 3.6 |
Steering is quick and precise for an SUV, and 4Runner feels more stable in tight turns than some rivals, though body lean and a slight tippy feel are evident.
QUIETNESS
| Base 2WD, 4 cyl | SR5 4WD | Limited 4WD | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | 4 | 4 | 3.6 |
The V6 is quieter than the 4-cylinder, but tire noise is well muffled in any model, leaving wind rush as the main irritant in this tall, boxy vehicle.
CONTROLS
| Base 2WD, 4 cyl | SR5 4WD | Limited 4WD | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7 | 7 | 7 | 6 |
The dash is no-nonsense and has a sporty look. Dual cupholders pop out from the center, but are placed so that containers block the climate controls.
ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)
| Base 2WD, 4 cyl | SR5 4WD | Limited 4WD | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 | 6 | 6 | 5.9 |
Tall tires and high stance create an unusually lofty step-in that makes entry/exit awkward for shorter people. Space is ample, though, and seats are comfortable.
ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)
| Base 2WD, 4 cyl | SR5 4WD | Limited 4WD | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 | 6 | 6 | 4.3 |
Better-than-average comfort for a middle passenger, but two adults will be more comfortable. Access is hampered by that tall step-in, and squeezed by narrow door bottoms.
CARGO ROOM
| Base 2WD, 4 cyl | SR5 4WD | Limited 4WD | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 | 8 | 8 | 7.5 |
Cargo space is generous even with the split-fold rear seat in use, but the load deck is rather high off the ground.
VALUE WITHIN CLASS
| Base 2WD, 4 cyl | SR5 4WD | Limited 4WD | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | 6 | 5 | 3.8 |
4Runner is among the pricier midsize SUVs, but a test drive might convince you that its top-notch quality, V6 refinement, and high resale value are worth the extra cost.
