2000 Subaru Impreza Full Review
Date Published: 4/15/08
2000 Subaru Impreza Review
Impreza gets a sportier version of its sedan for 2000, and remains the only subcompact car with standard all-wheel drive. It comes in workaday L coupe, sedan, and wagon; racy 2.5 RS coupe and new 2.5 RS sedan; and sport-utility-inspired Outback Sport wagon with raised roofline and extra ground clearance.
All have permanent all-wheel drive, manual or optional automatic transmission, and horizontally-opposed 4-cylinder engines. L models and the Outback Sport use a 2.2-liter, while 2.5 RS versions carry a 2.5 liter.
Antilock brakes are standard on Outback Sports and 2.5 RSs but are unavailable on L models. The 2.5 RS has 4-wheel disc brakes, and gets new design alloy wheels for 2000.
Competition
This crowded segment is best represented by two exceptional cars--one a Best Buy and the other a Recommended. Our Best Buy is the Honda Civic, which offers a wide range of bodystyles, engines, and equipment levels. Civic is a solid car that has good performance, a nice ride, and is very civilized.
Topping the Recommended list are the Volkswagen Golf and Jetta. They easily could be Best Buys as they are better than the Civic in many ways. However, they are also the most expensive cars in this segment. Other Recommended choices include the no-frills Chevrolet Cavalier and Dodge Neon, the slightly-upscale Chevy Prizm and clone Toyota Corolla, and the roomy Mazda Protege.
If you are looking for a Budget Buy we recommend you stay away from the Hyundai or Daewoo models and take a look at the Ford Escort.
News
A new-generation Impreza is being prepped for the 2002 model year. Details are sketchy yet, but spy photographers who've snapped prototypes undergoing tests say body width has been increased by a couple of inches; overall length and wheelbase appear little changed. We expect models and powertrains to follow the current pattern except that the base 2.2-liter engine may be scratched.
Some of our spies think Subaru will use the redesign to offer a hot turbocharged Impreza for the first time in America, though it may not be as torrid as the various Japanese and European models patterned on the World Rally Championship-winning Imprezas. Up to now, Subaru's U.S. arm has resisted selling any such high-tune turbo models (which include Legacys) because of durability and cost concerns, as well as compatibility with higher-sulphur U.S. fuel. Assuming Subaru takes the plunge, we'd look for at least 250 horsepower in an ultra-sporty Impreza coupe and possibly a sedan and/or wagon. Any or all will likely be limited editions marketed as street-racer material along the lines of the Honda Civic Si coupe. That's mainly because NASCAR-crazy America scarcely knows or cares about World Rally competition.
But why try a pumped-up Impreza at all? To improve the model's street buzz among younger buyers. Besides, Impreza needs some pumping up sales-wise. Year-to-year demand was basically flat in calendar 1999, and with total volume of just under 20,000 units, this Subaru is small potatoes compared to small-car popularity champs Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla.

Road noise can get annoying at highway speeds, as can the rough and loud engine.

Audio controls are tiny and poorly-marked, but the dashboard layout is otherwise effective.

L cpe, man. L sdn, auto. 2.5 RS cpe, man. Outback Sport, auto. Class Average
2 3 2 3 2.8

Leg room is tight even for a subcompact, and entry/exit suffers from narrow door swings and entryways.
Cargo Room

2 2 2 7 3.3

Small, even on wagons.

Though a tad gimmicky, the Outback Sport and 2.5 RS seem clever bows to the younger, "active lifestyle" set. No Impreza is exactly cheap, but their AWD is unique among subcompacts, and a big plus in snow-prone areas.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

NHTSA Crash-Test Results
Test Subaru Impreza 2-door coupe Subaru Impreza 4-door sedan Subaru Impreza 4-door wagon 2000 Subaru Impreza Outback 4-door wagon
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests a vehicle's worthiness in front- and side-impact collisions and rates its resistance to rollovers. Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.
