2000 Subaru Forester Full Review
Date Published: 6/10/08
2000 Subaru Forester Review
A trimmed lineup is the main change to the 2000 Forester, a "hybrid" that blends attributes of passenger cars and sport-utility vehicles. Forester is based on Subaru's Impreza station wagon, but has a taller stance in the mode of a traditional SUV.
The base-trim model is dropped for 2000, leaving L and uplevel S models. Both retain a 2.5-liter horizontally opposed 4-cylinder engine. Manual transmission is standard, automatic optional. Like all Subarus, Forester has standard all-wheel-drive designed to sense wheel slip and send power to the wheels with the most traction. Forester is not intended for serious off-road use, however, and its AWD system lacks low-range gearing.
Antilock brakes are standard on both models, but the S has 4-wheel discs, along with 16-inch alloy wheels instead of the L's 15-inch steel rims. The L gains standard cruise control for 2000, while the S adds a standard limited-slip differential.
Competition
Ignored in the past, compact SUVs are now some of the hottest-selling vehicles around. The two current Best Buys are the Honda CR-V and Subaru Forester. Though they don't offer true off-road ability, they mix the best ride, cargo, and comfort characteristics with all-weather traction.
Toyota's RAV4 , which used to be a Best Buy, falls to Recommended based on its noisy engine and cramped rear seating area. Toyota hopes that will change when an all-new RAV arrives in 2001.
As immovable as Mt. Rushmore, the Jeep Wrangler continues as our Budget Buy in this segment. Though it has become a status symbol of late, it's most at home crawling over rocks and fording river beds.
News
Forester has already started 2001, as lightly revised models reached showrooms this past spring. See 2001 Forester for more information.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

S, auto. Class Average
4 2.9

Our test '99 with automatic transmission went at 0-60 mph in 9.3 seconds, about par for a compact SUV.
Fuel Economy

S, auto. Class Average
6 4.8

We averaged 22.1 mpg in tests of an automatic-equipped '99. That's similar to rival compact SUVs, but much better than a traditional sport-utility wagon.
Ride Quality

S, auto. Class Average
5 2.7

Stiff but not but uncomfortable; more absorbent and stable than truck-based SUVs.
Steering/Handling/Braking

S, auto. Class Average
5 3.5

Responds quickly to steering inputs, with only moderate body lean in fast turns.
Quietness

S, auto. Class Average
5 2.4

Considerable road and wind noise, and the engine throbs under acceleration.
Controls

S, auto. Class Average
5 4.4

The audio controls are too small, but the dashboard layout is otherwise orderly and convenient.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

S, auto. Class Average
5 4.4

Ample head room for 6-footers, but leg room is a little tight for taller passengers.
Room/Comfort (rear)

S, auto. Class Average
3 2.9

Good head room, but leg space is poor and entry/exit is hindered by the small doors. Also, the seat is too narrow for comfortable 3-across seating.
Cargo Room

S, auto. Class Average
7 6.6

Split rear seatbacks fold fore and aft for a reclined seating position or a flat cargo floor. Load volume is generous for the exterior size.
Value within Class

S, auto. Class Average
7 3.8

Forester delivers AWD capability and carlike economy with a dash of SUV image. For many buyers, it's a smarter choice than a truck-based SUV, and shares Best Buy honors in this class with the Honda CR-V.

Model Prices
Prices Updated: 08/19/1999
Trim Name Retail Price Dealer Invoice Destination Charge
L 4-door wagon $20,095 $18,324 $495
S 4-door wagon $22,595 $20,506 $495
Price note: Prices are for vehicles distributed by Subaru of North America. Prices may be higher in areas serviced by independent distributors.
Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

Front Impact, Driver 4
Front Impact, Passenger 4
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests a vehicle's worthiness in front- and side-impact collisions and rates its resistance to rollovers. Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.
