ACCELERATION

L100 sdn, man. LW200 wgn, auto. L300 sdn Class Average
4 4 5 4.7

Adequate, but not exciting; Saturn says the automatic-transmission LS1 goes 0-60 mph in a 9.8 seconds, the V6/automatic LS2 in 8.2.

FUEL ECONOMY

L100 sdn, man. LW200 wgn, auto. L300 sdn Class Average
7 7 5 5.4

A V6/automatic sedan averaged 19 mpg in our tests, a 4-cylinder/automatic wagon returned 26.6 mpg.

RIDE QUALITY

L100 sdn, man. LW200 wgn, auto. L300 sdn Class Average
5 5 5 5

A firm ride is the price for the L's sporty handling. Wagons ride slightly stiffer than sedans, and neither absorbs bumps as well as a Camry.

STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING

L100 sdn, man. LW200 wgn, auto. L300 sdn Class Average
6 6 6 5

Confident cornering, with linear and communicative steering.

QUIETNESS

L100 sdn, man. LW200 wgn, auto. L300 sdn Class Average
6 5 6 5

As quiet as most competitors, although not as isolating as a Camry.

CONTROLS

L100 sdn, man. LW200 wgn, auto. L300 sdn Class Average
5 5 5 6

Instrumentation is large and clear, but the fan-speed switch moves crudely, and the automatic transmission's console-mounted gear-position indicator washes out in direct sunlight.

ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)

L100 sdn, man. LW200 wgn, auto. L300 sdn Class Average
5 4 5 5.2

Adequate head and leg room, with comfortable seats.

ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)

L100 sdn, man. LW200 wgn, auto. L300 sdn Class Average
4 4 4 4.1

Rear head and leg room is ample, but the rear cushion is soft and too low to the floor.

CARGO ROOM

L100 sdn, man. LW200 wgn, auto. L300 sdn Class Average
6 8 6 4.5

The sedan's large, accessible trunk is a competitive advantage, as is the availability of the wagon, a body style few rivals offer.

VALUE WITHIN CLASS

L100 sdn, man. LW200 wgn, auto. L300 sdn Class Average
6 6 6 5.3

The long-awaited L-Series satisfies in most facets of performance, and while its cabin is roomy, it's furnished to meet modest expectations. L-Series base prices, however, undercut those of comparable Accord and Camry models. The volume LS1/automatic, for example, lists for about $1730 less than an Accord LX and almost $2700 below a Camry LE.
