2000 Saab 9-3 Review
Introduced in spring '98 as a renamed 1999 update of Saab's 900 series, the 9-3 continues in uplevel SE 2- and 4-door hatchbacks and 2-door convertibles, while a high-performance Viggen 2-door returns from mid-1999 with new 5-door and soft-top companions. Only 1000 Viggens in all will be available for U.S. sale. All 9-3s use turbocharged 4-cylinder engines. The base 2.0-liter unit again makes 185 horsepower. SEs now come with last year's optional High Output 2.0, which gains 5 horsepower and is newly available with 4-speed automatic transmission. The Viggen's 2.3-liter also gains 5 hp and a little more torque; it teams only with 5-speed manual.
All 9-3s include 4-wheel antilock disc brakes, seat-mounted front side airbags, and Saab's front Active Head Restraints that are claimed to minimize whiplash injury. Convertibles feature a lined, hydraulically operated power top with glass rear window and electric defroster. Besides more standard power, SEs add a front "chin" spoiler, "aero" lower-body side and rear skirts, and sports steering wheel; the 4-door gets a special sports suspension as well, the SE convertible a standard rear spoiler. General Motors owns this Swedish automaker and GM's OnStar satellite-based communications system is a new 9-3 option.
Competition
This hotly contested segment has a clear benchmark, it is the Acura TL (and its 2-door cousin Acura CL). The TL succeeds in blending comfort, style, luxury, and sport into an efficient package at an affordable price.
But the Acura's not for everyone. We also recommend the sporty and Euro-flavored Audi A6, the comfortable Buick Park Avenue, the affordable and fast Infiniti I30, and the luxury-orientated Lexus ES 300.
News
The 9-3 has been doing good business lately, with volume almost doubling in calendar 1999 vs. '98 and holding fairly steady in the first four months of 2000. An all-new version of the smaller Saab is set to debut sometime in calendar 2002, probably as an '03 model. The current 9-3 is a Saab design created before General Motors bought a stake in the Swedish automaker. GM now owns all of Saab's car division, and the new 9-3 will follow big brother 9-5 in sharing a GM platform. In this case it's the new Epsilon foundation also destined for the next-generation Chevy Malibu, Olds Alero and Pontiac Grand Am. Sources say the new 9-3 will be offered in today's convertible and 3-door hatchback body styles, plus a 4-door sedan and a first-ever wagon, though it's unclear whether all four will be sold in America. Spy photos so far don't reveal much about styling, but front-wheel drive and turbocharged Saab 4-cylinder engines are a certainty. Expect the sedan and/or hatchback to appear first, with the convertible, wagon and high-performance Viggen models coming along within 12 months afterwards.
Even more intriguing, Saab is said to be working on a 2-seater, it's first in some 30 years, for a 2003 or '04 introduction. Sources say it will be a convertible with a kind of dune buggy look, but will not be based on the mid-engine Opel Speedster/Vauxhall VX220 recently launched by GM Europe as derivatives of the British-market Lotus Elise. Assuming that's true, the new open-air Saab would likely use a shortened 9-3 platform with the same front-engine/front-drive format.

Acceleration

Base 4-dr hatch, auto. SE conv, auto. Viggen 2-dr hatch, man. Class Average
6 7 7 5.3

Good overall. We timed a 5-speed base convertible at a quick 7.5 seconds 0-60 mph. However, there's marked turbo lag and, in SEs and Viggens, some unruly torque steer--pulling to the side in hard throttle.
Fuel Economy

Base 4-dr hatch, auto. SE conv, auto. Viggen 2-dr hatch, man. Class Average
5 5 5 5.7

A base-model 5-speed 4-door returned 21.3 mpg and a base 5-speed convertible 19.4. SEs and Viggens take premium fuel.
Ride Quality

Base 4-dr hatch, auto. SE conv, auto. Viggen 2-dr hatch, man. Class Average
7 5 4 5.3

SEs and Viggens have stiff high-performance tires that transmit lots of irritating thump and jiggle on small, sharp bumps. Base models have softer tires and should be more comfortable on any road.
Steering/Handling/Braking

Base 4-dr hatch, auto. SE conv, auto. Viggen 2-dr hatch, man. Class Average
6 5 7 6.4

Sporty and predictable in all models, with good cornering grip and accurate steering.
Quietness

Base 4-dr hatch, auto. SE conv, auto. Viggen 2-dr hatch, man. Class Average
6 4 5 5

Engines are muted and wind noise low. Tire noise on SEs and Viggens intrudes over coarse surfaces.
Controls

Base 4-dr hatch, auto. SE conv, auto. Viggen 2-dr hatch, man. Class Average
6 6 6 6

Generally good, but the SE's automatic climate system often loses its settings between startups. The floor-mount ignition switch is a Saab trademark.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

Base 4-dr hatch, auto. SE conv, auto. Viggen 2-dr hatch, man. Class Average
7 6 7 5.4

Lots of head clearance and good leg room.
Room/Comfort (rear)

Base 4-dr hatch, auto. SE conv, auto. Viggen 2-dr hatch, man. Class Average
6 3 4 3.3

Fine comfort and room in the hatchback's outboard positions; squeezed in the center. Convertibles have limited leg room, and seat only two in back because of a much narrower seat.
Cargo Room

Base 4-dr hatch, auto. SE conv, auto. Viggen 2-dr hatch, man. Class Average
7 2 7 3.6

Hatchbacks have wagon-like room and versatility. The convertible has a good-sized trunk for a ragtop. All models have a fold-down rear seatback.
Value within Class

Base 4-dr hatch, auto. SE conv, auto. Viggen 2-dr hatch, man. Class Average
4 2 2 3.3

Though modified in numerous ways from the old 900, the 9-3 is as just quirky--and as compromised in its turbo-engine performance and quavery convertible body. Saab loyalists will love it anyway, but for near-luxury Swedish-style, we'd opt for a Volvo S70 sedan or V70 wagon.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

NHTSA Crash-Test Results
Test Saab 9-3 2-door hatchback Saab 9-3 4-door hatchback Saab 9-3 2-door convertible
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests a vehicle's worthiness in front- and side-impact collisions and rates its resistance to rollovers. Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.
