2000 Porsche Boxster Full Review

2000 Porsche Boxster Review
A new high-performance model and more power for the base version are 2000 newsmakers for Porsche's mid-engine 2-seater. Boxster, the lowest-priced Porsche, is a rear-wheel-drive convertible with a horizontally opposed 6-cylinder engine mounted behind the cockpit. For 2000, the base model's 2.5-liter engine is enlarged to 2.7 liters and gains 16 horsepower, for 217. The new Boxster S has a 250-hp 3.2 liter. Manual transmission is standard; the base version has a 5-speed, the Boxster S a 6-speed. Both also offer Porsche's Tiptronic 5-speed automatic transmission with manual-shift buttons on the steering wheel. Antilock 4-wheel disc brakes and side airbags are standard.Boxster's rear tires are wider than the fronts, and the S comes with 17-inch wheels, a size that's optional on the base model in place of 16s; 18s are optional on both. The S also has larger brake discs, suspension upgrades, and dual exhaust outlets.
Competition
This class features an interesting mix of hard-core performance models and more luxurious touring convertibles. Our Best Buys give you a little of both worlds. The Chevrolet Corvette is fast, comfortable, and reasonably affordable. Unlike previous models it doesn't beat you up with a hard ride, and it will cruise quietly at highway speeds. Our other Best Buy, the Mazda Miata, is a bare-bones roadster with few frills and average acceleration, but for weekend fun on a twisty back road it's hard to beat.
If you don't mind spending a few more bucks, we recommend you take a look at the BMW Z3 and Mercedes-Benz SLK. Both are two-seat convertibles. The BMW is more sporty and the Mercedes is more luxurious.
If you are interested in bang-for-the-buck our Budget Buys include the Chevrolet Camaro and Ford Mustang. At any given price or equipment level the Camaro is a faster car, but the Mustang might be a little more user-friendly as a daily driver.
News
Introduced for model-year 1997, the Boxster should continue with few changes for the next two years or so. After that, a "significantly restyled" model is due, according to one well placed industry source. We take that to mean new outer-body sheetmetal on the existing mid-engine platform. Look for Porsche to standardize the 6-speed manual transmission for the base model as well as the S.
Though closing in on its 5th birthday, the Boxster remains on an upward sales curve. Year-to-year orders were up nearly 31 percent for calendar 1999 and 18 percent in the first four months of 2000. Worldwide demand remains strong as well, so the Boxster is "capacity constrained," meaning Porsche could sell more here if it could get them.

Acceleration

Our test '99 5-speed did 0-60 mph in 7.5 seconds. We haven't yet tested the 2000s, but Porsche says the base model does 0-60 in 6.4 seconds, and pegs the S at 5.7 seconds.

We averaged 21.7 mpg in spirited driving.
Ride Quality

Stiff, with lots of thumpy jiggle over tar strips and patches.
Steering/Handling/Braking

Base, auto. S, man. Class Average

Entertaining, with grippy stability, little body lean, and sure control.
Quietness

Base, auto. S, man. Class Average
1 1 3.6

Tiring for long distances, due to marked noise from engine, wind, and tires.
Controls

Base, auto. S, man. Class Average

The retro dashboard has confusing audio and climate controls, and lacks a glovebox. Also, the floor-hinged gas pedal is an unwanted throwback.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

Base, auto. S, man. Class Average
4 4 4.7

Leg and head room is acceptable for 6-footers, and the snug seats hug supportively. Entry/exit is tricky with the top up.
Cargo Room

Base, auto. S, man. Class Average
2 2 2.2

Front and rear compartments hold a fair bit of stuff for a 2-seater. Note that there's no topside engine access other than three "service ports" in the rear trunk.
Value within Class

Base, auto. S, man. Class Average
2 2 2.5

Boxster in a nice bridge between the single-minded no-nonsense approach of the Honda S2000 and the more flexible character of the 6-cylinder Z3. The Boxster S has skyrocket performance and a price to match. The BMW might be easiest to live with on a daily basis, but any sports car lover would covet a Boxster.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

NHTSA Crash-Test Results
Test Porsche Boxster 2-door convertible
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests a vehicle's worthiness in front- and side-impact collisions and rates its resistance to rollovers. Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.
