ACCELERATION
| Base, auto. | S, man. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 7 | 8 | 7.4 |
Our test '99 5-speed did 0-60 mph in 7.5 seconds. We haven't yet tested the 2000s, but Porsche says the base model does 0-60 in 6.4 seconds, and pegs the S at 5.7 seconds.
FUEL ECONOMY
| Base, auto. | S, man. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | 5 | 4.7 |
We averaged 21.7 mpg in spirited driving.
RIDE QUALITY
| Base, auto. | S, man. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | 2 | 3.4 |
Stiff, with lots of thumpy jiggle over tar strips and patches.
STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING
| Base, auto. | S, man. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 8 | 10 | 7.6 |
Entertaining, with grippy stability, little body lean, and sure control.
QUIETNESS
| Base, auto. | S, man. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1 | 3.6 |
Tiring for long distances, due to marked noise from engine, wind, and tires.
CONTROLS
| Base, auto. | S, man. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | 3 | 5.1 |
The retro dashboard has confusing audio and climate controls, and lacks a glovebox. Also, the floor-hinged gas pedal is an unwanted throwback.
ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)
| Base, auto. | S, man. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | 4 | 4.7 |
Leg and head room is acceptable for 6-footers, and the snug seats hug supportively. Entry/exit is tricky with the top up.
CARGO ROOM
| Base, auto. | S, man. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | 2 | 2.2 |
Front and rear compartments hold a fair bit of stuff for a 2-seater. Note that there's no topside engine access other than three "service ports" in the rear trunk.
VALUE WITHIN CLASS
| Base, auto. | S, man. | Class Average |

Boxster in a nice bridge between the single-minded no-nonsense approach of the Honda S2000 and the more flexible character of the 6-cylinder Z3. The Boxster S has skyrocket performance and a price to match. The BMW might be easiest to live with on a daily basis, but any sports car lover would covet a Boxster.
