2000 Porsche 911 Review
The return of a turbocharged model for 2001 makes news for Porsche's senior sports car. The rear-engine 911 continues to offer 2+2 coupe and Cabriolet convertible body styles in "base" Carrera form with rear-wheel drive and as Carrera 4 versions with permanent all-wheel drive. The new Turbo is an all-wheel-drive 2001 coupe. All 911s have standard front side airbags, antilock 4-wheel disc brakes, and 6-cylinder water-cooled engines with horizontally opposed cylinders. For 2000, the 3.4-liter Carrera engine gains 4 horsepower, to 300. The new Turbo gets a 3.6 with twin turbochargers good for 415 hp, plus bolder front and rear styling, 18-inch wheels and tires versus other models' 17s, and a unique "bi-plane" rear spoiler whose upper section automatically extends to enhance high-speed stability. All models have standard 6-speed manual transmission and offer Porsche's Tiptronic 5-speed automatic with manual-shift buttons on the steering wheel; the automatic is a first-time option for the Turbo. Porsche's Stability Management antiskid system is newly available for Carreras and standard elsewhere; PSM is designed to apply individual brakes to counteract skids in turns. A satellite navigation system also available.
Competition
This class features an interesting mix of hard-core performance models and more luxurious touring convertibles. Our Best Buys give you a little of both worlds. The Chevrolet Corvette is fast, comfortable, and reasonably affordable. Unlike previous models it doesn't beat you up with a hard ride, and it will cruise quietly at highway speeds. Our other Best Buy, the Mazda Miata, is a bare-bones roadster with few frills and average acceleration, but for weekend fun on a twisty back road it's hard to beat.

If you don't mind spending a few more bucks, we recommend you take a look at the BMW Z3 and Mercedes-Benz SLK. Both are two-seat convertibles. The BMW is more sporty and the Mercedes is more luxurious.

If you are interested in bang-for-the-buck our Budget Buys include the Chevrolet Camaro and Ford Mustang. At any given price or equipment level the Camaro is a faster car, but the Mustang might be a little more user-friendly as a daily driver.
News
Answering criticism that the 911 looks too much like the entry-level Boxster in front, Porsche will give 2001 Carreras the same face as the latest Turbo, with the same enlarged "basset hound" light clusters and a slightly extended nose without the Turbo's prominent in-bumper air ducts. Come 2002, Carreras will also get the Turbo's 3.6-liter engine displacement, which will reportedly combine with refinements to engine electronics and Porsche's VarioCam variable-valve-timing system to boost horsepower by 15 to 315 and torque to 273 pound-feet.

But that's not all. Arriving at about the same as the larger non-turbo engine is a new Targa, a body style missing from the 911 line since the new-generation water-cooled series appeared in 1998. Like the last Targa, the new one will have a full-length glass roof panel that powers back inside the rear window, but is said to have improved seals for reduced high-speed wind noise. It should be available in both Carrera and Carrera 4 form.

About 6 months after the Targa returns--say summer 2002--Porsche will introduce a new version of the Carrera 4S, which combines Turbo styling with the non-turbo engine. The 4S will reportedly have a simpler rear spoiler instead the Turbo's complex two-element affair and will lack its prominent rear-fender air ducts, but should look the same otherwise.

Also on deck for model-year '02 is a new version of the 911 GT2, a model previously sold in Europe but not the U.S. This is basically the Turbo again, but rear-drive only and stripped of non-essential features to reduce weight and boost performance. The twin-turbo engine will reportedly be reworked to deliver around 450 horsepower.

Acceleration

Carrera 4 cpe, man. Carrera 2 conv, man. Class Average
8 8 7.4

We haven't tested the Turbo, but regular 911s are terrific off the line and thrilling in highway passing situations. With gentle take offs, we timed our 6-speed test Cabrio at 5.6 seconds 0-60 mph.
Fuel Economy

Carrera 4 cpe, man. Carrera 2 conv, man. Class Average
4 5 4.7

In an even mix of city/highway driving, our test Cabrio averaged 20.3 mpg on the required premium fuel. A test Carrera 4 coupe averaged 17.2.
Ride Quality

Carrera 4 cpe, man. Carrera 2 conv, man. Class Average
3 3 3.4

Extremely firm, but not jarring.
Steering/Handling/Braking

Carrera 4 cpe, man. Carrera 2 conv, man. Class Average
10 9 7.6

Balanced and confident, with tenacious grip and quick communicative steering. The nose of the Carrera 2 we tested suffered a slight wayward feel in hard acceleration and in strong crosswinds.
Quietness

Carrera 4 cpe, man. Carrera 2 conv, man. Class Average
2 1 3.6

Lots of engine and tire noise at highway speeds, but no more than most high-performance sports cars.
Controls

Carrera 4 cpe, man. Carrera 2 conv, man. Class Average
3 3 5.1

Gauges are unobstructed, but the climate and audio controls are cryptic and haphazardly arrayed. The optional in-dash navigation system is frustrating to use.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

Carrera 4 cpe, man. Carrera 2 conv, man. Class Average
4 4 4.7

Plenty of seat travel, and head and shoulder room.
Room/Comfort (rear)

Carrera 4 cpe, man. Carrera 2 conv, man. Class Average
1 1 .7

Toddler-sized.

Cargo Room

Carrera 4 cpe, man. Carrera 2 conv, man. Class Average
2 2 2.2

There's no glovebox, just a center console and some small bins for modest interior storage. Folding the rear seatbacks fits a weekend's soft luggage. The front cargo compartment holds a couple of gym bags.
Value within Class

Carrera 4 cpe, man. Carrera 2 conv, man. Class Average
2 2 2.5

Among high-performance sports cars costing $60,000 or more, the 911 is the most practical and ranks with the Acura NSX as the most-satisfying daily driver. But while its performance and image are unquestioned, our test Carrera Cabrio and Carrera 4 coupe listed for more than $80,000. We couldn't justify spending so much when sports cars such as the BMW Z3-based M-Series coupe and roadster and Porsche's own Boxster deliver similar thrills for around $40,000. On the other hand, resale values are among the best anywhere, making any 911 a virtual no-lose investment in the long run.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests a vehicle's worthiness in front- and side-impact collisions and rates its resistance to rollovers. Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.
