Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration
Chrysler says Prowler does 0-60 mph in about 6 seconds. That seems slightly optimistic, although we didn't have a chance to time the '99 we tested.
Fuel Economy
Averaged 22.1 mpg in tests of a '99. Premium fuel is required.
Ride Quality
Stiff ride is jolting on larger bumps. Marked body shake doesn't help.
Steering/Handling/Braking
Body lean is almost nil, grip is tenacious--at least on dry roads--and the steering is accurate and not too heavy.
Quietness
Prominent wind and tire noise. Hearty, rumbling exhaust.
Controls
More hot-rod stylish than functional, but most switches are standard easy-to-use Chrysler items.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)
Small footwells, "bathtub" seating position, and narrow doorways make a tight cabin, with tricky entry/exit.
Cargo Room
Barely room for a soft briefcase between the trunklid and rear underbody. A matching trailer is available--and necessary for extended trips.
Value within Class
Any negatives are of little consequence to Prowler owners. This is a sunny-day toy, a lifestyle statement, and buyers snap them up as fast as they can be built.
