ACCELERATION

While the 2.0-liter 4-cylinder provides adequate acceleration with the standard 5-speed manual transmission, the optional 2.4-liter is a much better choice if you have a car full of people or cargo. The automatic transmission in our test car was responsive and usually in the right gear for the situation. It does not, however, give you manual access to second gear, which can be a nuisance in situations like slow downhill driving.

We averaged 27 mpg with a 2.0-liter model, but that included an abundance of highway driving. Expect 20-22 mpg in urban driving, which is still better than average for a midsize car.

As expected of "corporate cousins," the Breeze drives much like the Cirrus and Stratus. That means it has agile handling with little body lean and plenty of grip, making it fun to thread along twisting roads.

Though changes to the suspension this year help soften harder bumps a bit while quieting the highway ride, road noise can still be a problem.

Plenty of head and leg room for two large adults. Seats are comfortable but lack support for spirited driving. Visibility is great to all angles except the rear. The narrow rear window and high rear parcel shelf make it hard to see out the back.

Breeze has an airy interior that's unusually roomy for the car's compact exterior dimensions. There's plenty of leg space fore and aft and sufficient rear-seat width for three medium-size adults to travel without feeling like sardines. If there's a deficit, it's head room for taller people, especially in back.

Breeze has a large trunk with a flat floor and a large aperture that opens down to the bumper. The rear seatback folds down for more cargo space. Interior storage is more than adequate.

The last Breezes are by no means collectors items, but are well-equipped sedans with compact-size exterior dimensions and midsize passenger and cargo room. Prices are low considering the room and number of features. The similar Stratus and Cirrus offer more power and a wider assortment of options, but probably not the deep discounts available on this dying Breeze.
