Vehicle Highlights
An optional antiskid system tops the short list of additions to Oldsmobile's import-flavored midsize sedan. Intrigue returns in GX, GL, and top-line GLS models. All have a double overhead-cam 3.5-liter V6, automatic transmission, antilock 4-wheel disc brakes, and traction control.
The new antiskid device is called the Precision Control System (PCS). It's designed to help keep the car on its intended path by selective braking of one or more individual wheels. PCS is optional on all 2000 Intrigues, but requires GX buyers to order the optional full-function traction control that's already standard on the GL and GLS. Rounding out this year's changes are standard retained accessory power, an optional gold-trim package, and, for GLS, standard heated power front seats. Intrigue is built from the same design as the Buick Regal and Pontiac Grand Prix, although those cars use an overhead-valve 3.8 V6.
COMPETITION
Perennial Best Buys Honda Accord and Toyota Camry continue to shine with refinement, model diversity, and comfort. Both come in coupe and sedan form, offer economic 4-cylinder or sporty V6 power, have room for four adults, and are reasonably priced.
Recommended models include the smooth Buick Century, the import-flavored Chevy Malibu, the sporty Nissan Maxima, surprising Olds Intrigue, and the good-looking Pontiac Grand Prix. All come with V6 power, offer lots of standard equipment, and have pleasing road manners that will suit a variety of driving styles.
If you are looking for something a touch bigger without spending a whole lot more we suggest the Budget Buy Chevy Impala. It's the largest car in this class, has a powerful V6, and doesn't cost any more than the others.
