V6 Aleros have bothersome torque steer, but feel gutsy. Our test V6 went 0-60 mph in about 8 seconds. The 4-cylinder is considerably slower, but adequate.

Not harsh over bumps, but also not impressively compliant or stable. Some testers said small bumps upset cornering stability in our test GL3 with Sport package.

Good grip in steady-state cornering, but Alero can feel unsure in quick transitions. Also, the steering feels nervous on center and artificially heavy.

Wind noise is modest, but the tires thrum on all but smooth pavement. Also, the 4-cylinder vibrates at idle, and both engines sound coarse under hard throttle.

Alero is as roomy as some midsize cars, but the back seat lacks support for long trips, and entry/exit is a squeeze in coupes.

Trunks are wide and deep but don't extend far forward and have smallish openings. Split-fold rear seatbacks expand the cargo area.
