ACCELERATION
| SE | GLE | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | 2 | 3.6 |
V6 that delivers 60 mph in 10.4 seconds by our stopwatch. This 3.3-liter also powers Nissan pickups and sport-utilities and unfortunately sounds like a truck engine, but it's acceptably smooth and fairly quiet except near full throttle. Annoying is the word for our GXE's automatic transmission. Not only did it make abrupt, fairly harsh downshifts when flooring the throttle, its "Overdrive Off" button (at the end of the column lever) was overly sensitive and hard to use.
FUEL ECONOMY
| SE | GLE | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | 4 | 3.9 |
Respectable minivan mileage of just under 17 mpg in hard city/freeway driving.
RIDE QUALITY
| SE | GLE | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | 4 | 4.9 |
Absorbent ride that remains calm except on very rough pavement, when minor wheel patter sets in. The SE is a bit harsher than other Quests, but compensates with slightly crisper steering and cornering responses.
STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING
| SE | GLE | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | 5 | 4.3 |
While no minivan handles like a good sedan, Quest is predictable and pleasantly car-like, provided you don't rush it on tight, twisty roads. "Panic" braking is stable and undramatic, though distances aren't super-short for an ABS-equipped vehicle. Our test GXE suffered slightly mushy pedal action even in routine driving, plus a disturbing front-end "clank" that occurred on releasing the pedal during our emergency-stop tests.
QUIETNESS
| SE | GLE | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | 5 | 4.5 |
Low tire rumble and modest wind noise add to long-distance relaxation.
CONTROLS
| SE | GLE | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | 5 | 5.7 |
Instruments and controls are mostly Nissan and thus clear and convenient, but the Ford-supplied turn signal/wiper stalk isn't the best, the dash vents are perfectly placed to chill your hands, and we found it too easy to drive off with the foot-operated parking brake engaged.
ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)
| SE | GLE | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | 6 | 6 |
Most drivers are easily accommodated with a good range of seat and wheel adjustments.
ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)
| SE | GLE | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | 6 | 6.4 |
Quest (Villager too) is on par with the short-body Chrysler minivans for passenger and cargo space, which is plentiful for the exterior size.
CARGO ROOM
| SE | GLE | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 9 | 9 | 9.3 |
The unique sliding third-row seat is a slick idea for carrying extra cargo with up to 5 people aboard; a pity it can be folded up but not removed. Second-row seats are removable, but the GXE's bench requires two persons; the SE/GLE captain's chairs are more manageable. Equally slick is the two-position hard parcel shelf behind the third-row seat; it supports up to 30 pounds and also shields items beneath from prying eyes.
VALUE WITHIN CLASS
| SE | GLE | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | 4 | 5.8 |
Though not the roomiest or most refined minivans, Quest and Villager offer a good performance/economy blend, car-like road manners, several nifty features found nowhere else, and a package size that should suit most minivan buyers. Shop Nissan versus Mercury stores for the best deal, but don't forget the short-body Chrysler models and the Toyota Sienna, which offer similar room and refinement, plus some nifty features of their own.
