Vehicle Highlights
A redesigned 2000 Maxima was introduced last spring with revised styling, added power, and more features. Nissan's flagship sedan remains a front-drive midsize car, but adds 2 inches to its wheelbase for slightly more interior and trunk volume. A 3.0-liter V6 returns, but with 222 horsepower, an increase of 32, and with maintenance intervals extended to 100,000 miles.
Three models are offered. GXE and sporty SE come with a 5-speed manual transmission or extra-cost 4-speed automatic. The automatic is standard on the top-line GLE. Antilock brakes are now standard rather than optional on all, and front side airbags are a first-time option. Traction control is optional for SE and GLE.
The SE again comes with a rear spoiler and firmer suspension and offers a 17-inch wheel/tire option. Sixteen-inch alloy wheels are standard on SE and GLE and optional in place of 15s on the GXE. Leather upholstery is standard on GLE, optional on SE, and unavailable on GXE. An anti-theft engine immobilizer is now part of the standard remote keyless-entry system.
COMPETITION
Perennial Best Buys Honda Accord and Toyota Camry continue to shine with refinement, model diversity, and comfort. Both come in coupe and sedan form, offer economic 4-cylinder or sporty V6 power, have room for four adults, and are reasonably priced.
Recommended models include the smooth Buick Century, the import-flavored Chevy Malibu, the sporty Nissan Maxima, surprising Olds Intrigue, and the good-looking Pontiac Grand Prix. All come with V6 power, offer lots of standard equipment, and have pleasing road manners that will suit a variety of driving styles.
If you are looking for something a touch bigger without spending a whole lot more we suggest the Budget Buy Chevy Impala. It's the largest car in this class, has a powerful V6, and doesn't cost any more than the others.
