2000 Nissan Altima Full Review
Date Published: 4/09/08
2000 Nissan Altima Review
Nissan's best-selling car line gets a makeover for 2000, including first-time availability of front side airbags. Altima continues in base XE, volume GXE, sporty SE, and luxury GLE sedans, all with a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine that gains 5 horsepower. Automatic transmission is standard on the GLE, optional on other Altimas in place of a 5-speed manual. Antilock brakes are optional except for the base Altima.
Front side airbags are standard on GLE and optional for GXE and SE. Among other changes, SE and GLE gain standard 16-inch wheels and tires instead of 15s, plus a cross-car brace in the engine bay. All Altimas get revisions to steering and suspension, as well as fresh front and rear fascias, a new center console with automatic transmission, and the addition of rear cupholders. A new Appearance and Convenience Package gives the GXE the GLE's suspension and 16-inch wheels, among other items. Leather upholstery is standard for GLE, optional for SE.
Competition
Mazda's 626 gets the nod as the Best Buy in this class. Not because it's the fastest or roomiest, but because it is the best all-around performer. Ranging in price from $18,000 to $22,000 depending on equipment and engine choice, the 626 offers room for four large adults, a comfortable but sporty ride, above average acceleration, and good fuel economy.
Recommended choices include the sporty Mitsubishi Galant, the vanilla Nissan Altima, the powerful Oldsmobile Alero, and the refined Volkswagen Passat.
Hyundai's Sonata is our Budget Buy here. Though it's just an average performer on the road, its below average price and quality construction help it stand out. Chrysler's new PT Cruiser is the wildcard in this segment. Not really a sport-utility or minivan, the PT has been well-received by our staff. It offers versatility and eye-catching styling not found among compact cars.
News
Altima's 2000 update was surprisingly extensive for a year-old design, especially as the '99 models recorded higher sales. Then again, that calendar-year increase was a modest 6 percent, and orders in the first four months of 2000 are down about 6 percent. As Altima is Nissan's top-selling car, this situation must be worrisome for a company now fighting for its life.
One way to win that battle is to cut costs, and one way Nissan is doing that is to reduce its number of separate platforms, models and powertrains. This explains why the current Altima will be a short-timer, giving way after 2001 to a slightly larger new-design replacement. Informed sources say the '02 Altima will grow 2.9 inches in wheelbase to 105 and 2.2 inches in length to 188, courtesy of a new platform. More significantly, the '02 offer a V6 option for the first time in Altima history. It's expected to be Nissan's familiar 3.0-liter V6, borrowed from the larger Maxima. The current 2.4-liter 4-cylinder will remain base Altima power. To keep appropriate price and image distance between Altima and Maxima, Nissan will give the latter a standard 3.5-liter V6 for '02, then shift the car to a stretched version of the new Altima platform for 2004. At least that's the plan now. Nissan's new owner, Renault of France, has set in motion a radical cost-cutting strategy that may change parts or all of this scenario.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

GXE, auto. SE, man. Class Average
5 5 3.7

We had no opportunity to time our 2000 test cars, but Nissan says new gearing trims a second off 0-60 mph times. Our '99 automatic GLE test car went 0-60 mph in a sleepy 10 seconds. Unfortunately the automatic transmission still hesitates to downshift at midrange speeds, and sometimes slurs upshifts.
Fuel Economy

GXE, auto. SE, man. Class Average
5 5 6.6

The 5-speed GXE we tested averaged 20.4 mpg, compared to 23.4 for that '99 GXE automatic.
Ride Quality

GXE, auto. SE, man. Class Average
5 5 3.5

Ride is more controlled, thanks to firmer mounts for steering and suspension, and to revised shock absorbers.
Steering/Handling/Braking

GXE, auto. SE, man. Class Average
5 6 4.3

Less body lean and better all-around poise than the previous Altima, but the steering remains a bit numb on-center, requiring more correction than we like at highway speeds.
Quietness

GXE, auto. SE, man. Class Average
5 5 3.6

Not as quiet as a Honda Civic, but wind noise is greatly reduced, and all Altima models take bumps without thumping or drumming.
Controls

GXE, auto. SE, man. Class Average
6 6 5.5

The dashboard has convenient, guess-free controls.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

GXE, auto. SE, man. Class Average
6 6 4.2

Ample space for 6-footers, and more comfortable than most compact cars.
Room/Comfort (rear)

GXE, auto. SE, man. Class Average
3 3 2.8

Good leg room for 6-footers, but the back seat is too short, soft, and ill-shaped to be supportive. Narrow door openings hamper entry/exit, but that's true of most compact sedans.
Cargo Room

GXE, auto. SE, man. Class Average
3 3 3.3

Trunk space remains good, though a broad sill can make for back-straining reaches and the lid hinges intrude into the load area.
Value within Class

GXE, auto. SE, man. Class Average
7 7 4.2

This year's changes add welcome spice to what was a competent if bland family compact. It's part of Nissan's image-building campaign and makes Altima a stronger class contender, especially as the many improvements come with virtually no price increase. Unfortunately, the 2000s probably won't be discounted as much as the '99s, which is also part of Nissan's plan.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests a vehicle's worthiness in front- and side-impact collisions and rates its resistance to rollovers. Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.
