ACCELERATION

GS, I4 auto. LS, V6 auto. Class Average
3 4 3.7

The best powertrain is the V6/automatic, which is smooth and quite peppy. The automatic works about as well with the 4-cylinder, but that engine is noisier and has trouble mustering power to conquer hills, though it's more than adequate with manual shift.

FUEL ECONOMY

GS, I4 auto. LS, V6 auto. Class Average
5 5 6.6

Fuel economy with the V-6/automatic was a disappointing 19.9 mpg, though most of our 500 miles came in stop-and-go traffic.

RIDE QUALITY

GS, I4 auto. LS, V6 auto. Class Average
3 3 3.5

Ride quality is Euro firm with plenty of road feel and only modest bump absorption.

STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING

GS, I4 auto. LS, V6 auto. Class Average
6 6 4.3

The Mystique is competent and fun on twisty 2-lane roads, more like European sports sedans than American family compacts. Braking power and feel are good with the optional ABS; standard 4-wheel discs are an LS plus.

QUIETNESS

GS, I4 auto. LS, V6 auto. Class Average
4 4 3.6

Road noise is prominent on all models but wind noise is low.

CONTROLS

GS, I4 auto. LS, V6 auto. Class Average
4 4 5.5

The dashboard looks a bit busy, but is easy enough to sort out.

ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)

GS, I4 auto. LS, V6 auto. Class Average
4 4 4.2

Front seat leg and head room are good, but the seats are narrow and confining for larger adults.

ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)

GS, I4 auto. LS, V6 auto. Class Average
3 3 2.8

Back-seaters had better be no taller than about 5-foot-10, and they'll find leg room scarce with the front seats pushed more than halfway back.

CARGO ROOM

GS, I4 auto. LS, V6 auto. Class Average
3 3 3.3

Though the trunk opening is small, cargo room is good, thanks to a flat floor that goes well forward; a standard 60/40 split-fold rear seatback allows carrying long items.

VALUE WITHIN CLASS

GS, I4 auto. LS, V6 auto. Class Average
4 4 4.2

Aside from the limited rear seat space, Mystique is well designed and has competent performance. Because it's so similar to the Contour, shop Ford and Mercury dealers for the best price, though Mystique sells far less well than Contour, itself no star, and may be discounted more heavily.
