Vehicle Highlights
The smaller of Mercedes' two convertibles adds a free-of-charge Limited Edition package to close out the 2000 model year and prepare for introduction of a V6 2001 model.
The SLK230 uses a supercharged 4-cylinder engine with a 5-speed manual or an optional 5-speed automatic transmission. The 2-seater's metal roof powers down into the trunk. Standard equipment includes side airbags, antilock 4-wheel disc brakes, traction control, and a feature that automatically deactivates the right-side airbags when a special Mercedes child seat is present. Mercedes says most SLKs built in the second half of the model year will be Limited Edition versions, which include special paint and two-tone leather upholstery, unique 17-inch wheels with low-profile tires, and a portable cell phone. Mercedes says this equipment would otherwise cost $4200. A separate Sport package option adds different 17-inch alloys in place of the standard 16-inchers, and different lower-body cladding. Also new for 2000 is an optional voice-activated cell phone as part of a package that also includes a 6-disc CD changer. All Mercedes vehicles now include some maintenance items in the basic 4-year/50,000-mile warranty.
Due later in 2000, the '01 SLK will get minor appearance changes, add a 218-horsepower V6 to accompany the supercharged four, and replace the 5-speed manual with a 6-speed.
COMPETITION
This class features an interesting mix of hard-core performance models and more luxurious touring convertibles. Our Best Buys give you a little of both worlds. The Chevrolet Corvette is fast, comfortable, and reasonably affordable. Unlike previous models it doesn't beat you up with a hard ride, and it will cruise quietly at highway speeds. Our other Best Buy, the Mazda Miata, is a bare-bones roadster with few frills and average acceleration, but for weekend fun on a twisty back road it's hard to beat. If you don't mind spending a few more bucks, we recommend you take a look at the BMW Z3 and Mercedes-Benz SLK. Both are two-seat convertibles. The BMW is more sporty and the Mercedes is more luxurious. If you are interested in bang-for-the-buck our Budget Buys include the Chevrolet Camaro and Ford Mustang. At any given price or equipment level the Camaro is a faster car, but the Mustang might be a little more user-friendly as a daily driver.
