Vehicle Highlights
Heated seats and an adaptive suspension are new options for the V8 version of Mercedes' top-line convertible. The SL-Class contains two models, both with power soft top and a removable aluminum hardtop. The SL500 uses a 5.0-liter V8 that produces 302 horsepower. The SL600 uses a 389-hp 6.0-liter V12. Both have standard antilock brakes, front side airbags, and Mercedes' ESP antiskid system. Newly standard on both is Mercedes' TeleAid emergency assistance system.
A glass-roof Panorama hardtop is available, as is a Sport Package that offers new-design 18-inch wheels, plus high-performance tires and different lower-body styling. Both SLs again include Mercedes' Brake Assist and BabySmart child-seat recognition system. Also standard is a roll bar behind the cockpit that automatically pops up when sensors detect an impending rollover. Again standard on the SL600 and newly optional for the SL500 are heated seats and Mercedes' Adaptive Damping System, which automatically adjusts shock-absorber firmness to suit driving conditions. All Mercedes vehicles now include some maintenance items in the basic 4-year/50,000-mile warranty.
COMPETITION
This diverse segment offers the widest price range. It covers everything from the $33,000 Saab 9-5 to the $128,000 Mercedes-Benz SL500. Obviously our Best Buys are somewhere in between. We think that the Acura RL is a steal at $42,000 fully equipped. Though it is a front-drive V6 in a field of V8 rear-drive models, it has a great ride, plenty of power, and is quite luxurious. In the same vein, the more-expensive Lexus LS 400 continues to impress, excelling in every way except for handling. If you are looking for something a bit more sporting we recommend the BMW 5-Series, Jaguar S-Type, or Lexus GS 300/400. If your taste ranges more toward the luxury end, then take a look at the new Cadillac DeVille or Mercedes-Benz CLK.
