2000 Mercedes-Benz CLK Full Review
Date Published: 2/20/08
2000 Mercedes-Benz CLK Review
The sporty 2-door offshoots of Mercedes' compact C-Class sedan continue in coupe and convertible body styles. A V8 ragtop is new, and all CLKs get a standard antiskid system, new outside mirrors with turn-signal indicators, and an optional satellite navigation system with in-dash screen. Convertibles have a power top and defrosted-glass rear window. CLK320s retain a 3.2-liter V6, the CLK430s a 4.3-liter V8. The only transmission is a 5-speed automatic, now with manual-shift feature. Other standards include antilock brakes, traction control, front side airbags, M-B's TeleAid emergency assistance system, and the antiskid Electronic Stability Program, which had been optional for V6 CLKs. The CLK320s also get new wheels and lower-body sections. V8 models boast larger brakes, firmer suspension, 17-inch wheels (versus 16s) and performance tires, and different lower-body cladding. All Mercedes vehicles now include some maintenance items in the 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty.
Coming for 2001 are minor styling revisions to existing models and a new high-performance coupe, the CLK55 AMG, with the same 342-horsepower 5.4-liter V8 found in other AMG Mercedes. The CLK55 is claimed to be the quickest showroom Benz ever, with a quoted 0-60 mph time of 5.2 seconds.
Competition
This diverse segment offers the widest price range. It covers everything from the $33,000 Saab 9-5 to the $128,000 Mercedes-Benz SL500. Obviously our Best Buys are somewhere in between. We think that the Acura RL is a steal at $42,000 fully equipped. Though it is a front-drive V6 in a field of V8 rear-drive models, it has a great ride, plenty of power, and is quite luxurious. In the same vein, the more-expensive Lexus LS 400 continues to impress, excelling in every way except for handling.
If you are looking for something a bit more sporting we recommend the BMW 5-Series, Jaguar S-Type, or Lexus GS 300/400. If your taste ranges more toward the luxury end, then take a look at the new Cadillac DeVille or Mercedes-Benz CLK.
News
The debut of new-generation C-Class sedans this September implies that the sportier CLKs will be updated too. They will be, of course, but European reports suggest they won't arrive until late 2002 as '03 models. Spy photos of prototypes show styling cautiously evolved from the current look, but wheelbase appears to be somewhat longer in line with Mercedes' goal of enlarging today's somewhat cramped 2+2s into more comfortable 4-seat cars. Other details are hazy, but we'd expect U.S.-bound models to retain the existing V6 and V8 engines, plus subtly modified chassis components a la the new C-Class. One European source says that all new Mercedes platforms will be compatible with the company's 4Matic all-wheel drive, but it's unclear whether Mercedes will offer that here in a CLK.
Meantime, the new 2001 CLK 55 coupe follows other AMG Mercedes in being specially fettled by the company's hot-car division, offering high-performance suspension, larger wheels and tires, and unique interior and exterior trim. Power, as the model name implies, comes from the same 5.4-liter V8 used in the E55 sedan, ML55 SUV, and the new 2001 S55, with 342 horsepower and 376 pound-feet of torque in this application. A convertible CLK55 was recently introduced to Europe and may join the coupe in the U.S., especially if BMW offers a new M3 drop-top. Mercedes is determined to match its German competition model-for-model, as well as to achieve a sportier, more with-it image. The CLK55 is just the latest piece of that plan.
Overall CLK sales remain quite healthy, so discounts are not common. However, earlier models are starting to show up at participating dealers in Mercedes' Starmark certified used-car program, and would be a good alternative to a new CLK, especially for those on a budget.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

CLK320 cpe CLK430 conv Class Average
6 7 7.4

Our test CLK320 coupe ran 0-60 mph in 6.9 seconds. We haven't timed a 430, but it seems capable of Mercedes' 6.1-second 0-60 claim. Convertibles are a bit slower due to their added weight. The high-performance tires on our test CLK430 coupe virtually immobilized it on snowy streets.
Fuel Economy

CLK320 cpe CLK430 conv Class Average
5 5 4.7

In our tests, a CLK320 coupe averaged 21.6 mpg and a 430 coupe 20.2. Premium gas is mandatory for both.
Ride Quality

CLK320 cpe CLK430 conv Class Average
6 5 3.4

Firm but mostly comfortable, spoiled by thumping and occasional sharp reactions over expansion joints. Mercedes took unusual pains to make the convertibles solid, and they succeeded.
Steering/Handling/Braking

CLK320 cpe CLK430 conv Class Average
6 7 7.6

Agile, sure, and reasonably flat in cornering, but also a bit less athletic than a comparable BMW 3-Series. All have a slightly weighty steering feel, especially the heavier convertible.
Quietness

CLK320 cpe CLK430 conv Class Average
6 5 3.6

Our test 320 coupe suffered tire thrum and minor wind hiss even in gentle cruising. Engines emit a pleasing, subdued snarl under hard throttle and are nearly inaudible at other times. Convertibles are much quieter than most ragtops.
Controls

CLK320 cpe CLK430 conv Class Average
5 5 5.1

Typical Mercedes design and function, but several switches are poorly marked or placed, and the radio is particularly confusing.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

CLK320 cpe CLK430 conv Class Average
5 5 4.7

The feel is snug, not spacious, but useable room is sufficient for a compact 2-door. Coupes have little head clearance for 6-footers.
Room/Comfort (rear)

CLK320 cpe CLK430 conv Class Average
2 2 .7

The seat is shaped for two only, leg room vanishes behind a tall front occupant, and access demands a big scrunch even with front seats that power forward on tilting the backrests.
Cargo Room

CLK320 cpe CLK430 conv Class Average
2 2 2.2

Decent in all models, but the convertible's trunk volume shrinks to just 5.8 cubic feet with the top lowered.
Value within Class

CLK320 cpe CLK430 conv Class Average
3 2 2.5

Every CLK has style, poise, and Mercedes cachet, plus the promise of good dollar return at trade-in or lease-renewal time. That makes them good values as comfortable, capable tourers for two, especially against Volvo's less refined 5-cylinder C70 models.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.
