ACCELERATION

LX, 4 cyl auto. ES, V6 auto. Class Average
3 5 3.7

The 4-cylinder is adequate with manual shift but sluggish with automatic. V6s are lively with either transmission. Regardless of engine, Mazda's automatic sometimes downshifts with a jerk.

FUEL ECONOMY

LX, 4 cyl auto. ES, V6 auto. Class Average
6 5 6.6

A pleasing 22.5 mpg in a manual-transmission V6 test model. Expect slightly less with automatic, slightly more with a 4-cylinder.

RIDE QUALITY

LX, 4 cyl auto. ES, V6 auto. Class Average
5 5 3.5

Ride is absorbent, but high-speed dips induce some floating.

STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING

LX, 4 cyl auto. ES, V6 auto. Class Average
4 5 4.3

Directional changes aren't sport-sedan crisp, though body lean in turns is mild.

QUIETNESS

LX, 4 cyl auto. ES, V6 auto. Class Average
5 5 3.6

Engine and wind noise are well muffled, though tire roar is too audible over coarse pavement.

CONTROLS

LX, 4 cyl auto. ES, V6 auto. Class Average
6 6 5.5

Generic in design, but nothing's obstructed, poorly marked, or difficult to reach. Oscillating center dash vents are a nice touch.

ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)

LX, 4 cyl auto. ES, V6 auto. Class Average
5 5 4.2

Good head room in an airy cabin. Firm, supportive seats.

ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)

LX, 4 cyl auto. ES, V6 auto. Class Average
5 5 2.8

Rivals some midsize sedans in allowing 6-footers to sit in tandem without the rear rider's knees digging into the front seats.

CARGO ROOM

LX, 4 cyl auto. ES, V6 auto. Class Average
3 3 3.3

Generously sized and usefully shaped with a low lift-over and relatively large opening.

VALUE WITHIN CLASS

LX, 4 cyl auto. ES, V6 auto. Class Average
6 6 4.2

The 626 isn't the sportiest compact sedan, and it tends to be overlooked by most consumers, but it's such a highly competent family 4-door that we give it our Best Buy mark in this class. LXs offer better dollar value than EXs, but stiff competition means you shouldn't have to pay full retail for any of these Mazdas.
