ACCELERATION
| V6, man. | V8 | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | 6 | 6.2 |
Strong with the V8; Lincoln claims 0-60 mph in a respectable 7.7 seconds. It says an automatic V6 needs 9.3 seconds. That's not outstanding, but the V6 feels adequate except when real passing punch is required. With either engine, the automatic transmission is slow to downshift to provide more passing power.
FUEL ECONOMY
| V6, man. | V8 | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | 4 | 4.6 |
We averaged 16.3 mpg in a test of a V8 LS and 19.6 with a manual V6; Lincoln recommends premium fuel for both.
RIDE QUALITY
| V6, man. | V8 | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | 7 | 6.5 |
The dynamic equal of some costlier import sedans, providing a smooth, controlled ride.
STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING
| V6, man. | V8 | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 7 | 6 | 6.3 |
Low-speed steering feel could be firmer, but the LS turns in crisply and corners with grippy precision and modest lean. The optional Sport Package enhances body control without harming the impressively supple ride.
QUIETNESS
| V6, man. | V8 | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | 7 | 6.8 |
Engine and wind noise are muted, but tire noise intrudes on some coarse surfaces.
CONTROLS
| V6, man. | V8 | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | 6 | 6.2 |
Gauges are clear, but none of our staff found the all-button climate system easy to use.
ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)
| V6, man. | V8 | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | 7 | 6.9 |
Seats are firm yet comfortable with plenty of leg room, but the optional sunroof cuts into headroom.
ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)
| V6, man. | V8 | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | 6 | 5.1 |
Though the LS feels less cramped than the S-Type, four adults is the practical limit. Head clearance is so-so, but there's good rear leg space even behind tall front occupants.
CARGO ROOM
| V6, man. | V8 | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | 3 | 3.9 |
Interior storage is meager, and the optional CD changer fills most of the glovebox. Models with the Sport Package have but one front cupholder. Cargo space looks good on paper, but isn't particularly useful.
VALUE WITHIN CLASS
| V6, man. | V8 | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | 3 | 4.1 |
Among the few near-luxury cars available with a V8 engine, the LS includes lots of features for the money, and has capable road manners that help offset ordinary interior furnishings. On balance, it begs comparison with sedans costing thousands more.
