ACCELERATION

Base Class Average
5 4.4

The LX 470 is one of the quicker big SUVs, its smooth, brawny V8 delivering 0-60 mph in a little over 9 seconds.

FUEL ECONOMY

Base Class Average
2 2

Mileage is as expected of a large, boxy heavyweight, our test LX managing only 14.1 mpg overall on the required premium fuel.

RIDE QUALITY

Base Class Average
7 5.8

The LX 470 has a slightly softer on-road ride than the Land Cruiser. But the variable suspension is of dubious merit, and though the height-adjustable suspension has its advantages, few owners will probably make use of it.

STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING

Base Class Average
4 3.5

The LX exhibits almost carlike steering, handling, and refinement. Body lean is evident but not alarming in hard, tight turns, and grip is always good with the full-time 4WD.

QUIETNESS

Base Class Average
8 6.1

Noise levels are noticeably lower than in most competitors. The engine is especially quiet, leaving wind rush and some tire thrum audible at highway speeds.

CONTROLS

Base Class Average
7 5.4

Dash design is logical and convenient, and there's plenty of places for maps, cups, and other stuff.

ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)

Base Class Average
9 8.3

These big rigs exploit their exterior bulk with a spacious interiors.

ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)

Base Class Average
8 7.7

Plenty of room and comfort in the second row, but the doorways are narrow at the bottom and there's scant space for crawling past the second seat. Room in the third-row bench is tight for all but a pair of pre-teens.

CARGO ROOM

Base Class Average
8 8.1

The third-row seat is split to fold up laterally, while the divided reclining middle seat double-folds for maximum cargo space.

VALUE WITHIN CLASS

Base Class Average
2 3

The LX 470 may be the nicest truck-style SUV around--but then, so is the less gilded Land Cruiser. Still, the Lexus boasts a longer warranty than the Toyota's, the promise of better customer service, and extra functional and luxury features. The trick suspension seems of minimal benefit, though.
