2000 Lexus LS 400 Review
Toyota's luxury-division flagship sedan closes out its second-generation design by adding a Brake Assist feature and rear child-seat anchors. A redesigned 2001 model, called the LS 430, is due later this fall with similar styling, but with a larger V8 and even more luxury features. The 2000 LS 400 continues with V8 power, 5-speed automatic transmission, seat-mounted front side airbags, antilock brakes, traction control, and Lexus's Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) antiskid system that brakes individual wheels when needed in emergency maneuvers. Options again include power moonroof, heated front seats, premium Nakamichi audio, CD changer, high-intensity headlamps, electronic air suspension with rear self-leveling, and a satellite navigation system with in-dash screen. Also, new Platinum Series option packages add special trim inside and out and include a Lexus-paid American Express credit card for two years, the last a $600 value, according to Lexus.
Competition
This diverse segment offers the widest price range. It covers everything from the $33,000 Saab 9-5 to the $128,000 Mercedes-Benz SL500. Obviously our Best Buys are somewhere in between. We think that the Acura RL is a steal at $42,000 fully equipped. Though it is a front-drive V6 in a field of V8 rear-drive models, it has a great ride, plenty of power, and is quite luxurious. In the same vein, the more-expensive Lexus LS 400 continues to impress, excelling in every way except for handling.
If you are looking for something a bit more sporting we recommend the BMW 5-Series, Jaguar S-Type, or Lexus GS 300/400. If your taste ranges more toward the luxury end, then take a look at the new Cadillac DeVille or Mercedes-Benz CLK.
News
Lexus has already partly unwrapped its new LS 430, which arrives this October to replace the LS 400. Styling from some angles is remarkably like that of the previous Mercedes S-Class, but the Lexus claims the lowest drag coefficient of any current sedan with a figure of just 0.25. Passenger room is up, thanks to a 3-inch longer wheelbase (to 115.2) and a 2.4-inch gain in overall height. Overall length is unchanged. Against the latest S-Class, the LS 430 claims more front leg and head room, 0.3-cubic foot more total interior volume, and a larger trunk (16.1 cubic feet vs. 15.4 for the Mercedes and 13.4 for the LS 400).
Under the hood is an enlarged version of the Lexus twin-cam V8, now at 4.3 liters but with the same 290 horsepower as the familiar 4.0-liter unit. The extra displacement has improved torque by 20 pound-feet to 320, which implies sprightlier acceleration both off the line and from mid-range speeds. Lexus claims 0-60 mph in 6.2 seconds. A 5-speed automatic returns as the only transmission, but is bolstered by "torque-activated powertrain control," a claimed first. This governs throttle opening based on sensor input regarding vehicle speed and engine rpm as well as pedal position. Lexus cites the example of climbing a grade, where the controller will automatically open the throttle to provide more power, thus minimizing unwanted shifting. We look forward to seeing how well it works.
Like the LS 400, the new 430 has standard 4-wheel antilock disc brakes with Lexus' Brake Assist feature, plus traction control and Lexus' antiskid Vehicle Stability Control system. Air suspension becomes standard instead of optional, however, as does a DVD-based satellite navigation system with 7-inch dashboard display screen. An newly optional voice-activated cell phone also provides voice operation for the navigator.
Lexus has obviously tried hard to make the LS 430 the world's quietest car, claiming a virtual absence of wind noise, even tighter gaps between body panels, and more sumptuous interior materials. There's also a raft of new comfort and convenience features, some of them industry firsts. For example, the front seats have standard heating and cooling elements rather than fans, and the rear bench seat is available with heating and massage functions, plus a memory system for the power-adjustable backrests. Features new to this Lexus but already seen elsewhere include an in-dash 6-disc CD changer, steering-wheel audio controls, power rear sunshade, manual rear-door sunshades, dual-level heated front seats, sonar-type proximity warning system, and power door and trunklid closers. There's also a first-time audio option by Mark Levinson, maker of very high-end home component systems, replacing the current Nakamichi setup.
Pricing hadn't released for this report, but LS 400 sales were down in 1999 vs. '98, so we'd expect the 430 to start only a little higher despite the added standard equipment. Even in the luxury class, Lexus knows it's in something of a "value race" with Mercedes, so it literally can't afford to up-price the 430 too much. We'll have more details as they become available.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

Base Class Average
7 6.4

Smooth, quick, and quiet aptly describe the LS 400. Acceleration is strong at 6.1 seconds to 60 mph in our tests, highway passing ability impressive.
Fuel Economy

Base Class Average
5 4.3

Premium fuel is required, but we've averaged 21.3 mpg on a long highway trip and 19.0 in a 50/50 mix of city and freeway driving.
Ride Quality

Base Class Average
9 7.5

Outstanding overall, but higher-speed driving induces unwanted body float over big humps and dips, and sharp bumps jolt more than expected.
Steering/Handling/Braking

Base Class Average
6 5.9

Though too large and softly damped to be nimble, the LS 400 has good grip and balance for a luxury 4-door, plus only modest cornering lean. The Vehicle Stability Control helps in slippery conditions.
Quietness

Base Class Average
10 7.7

Lexus's twin-cam V8 emits only a muted growl at high rpm, and lots of sound dampening makes this one of the world's quietest cars.
Controls

Base Class Average
7 5.5

Most everything's easy to see, reach, and use. The optional navigation system is helpful, but radio and climate controls work from its touch-screen display--rather fussy and distracting.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

Base Class Average
10 7.6

Seats are wide and comfortable, and even larger folk get ample head and leg room.
Room/Comfort (rear)

Base Class Average
8 6.8

Adults enjoy good leg space but only adequate head room, and no one will like straddling the bulky transmission hump in the rear-drive LS.
Cargo Room

Base Class Average
3 4.4

More than adequate for a long weekend, but only so-so for a luxury sedan.
Value within Class

Base Class Average
7 3.8

Though it's easily $60,000 with options, the LS 400 is unexcelled for features, refinement, performance, reliability, and safety. High reliability and blue-chip resale values help mitigate the price of admission. Note also that Lexus is preparing a redesign of its flagship for 2001 as the LS 430.

Prices Updated: 01/21/2000
Trim Name Retail Price Dealer Invoice Destination Charge
Base 4-door sedan $54,005 $45,818 $495
Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.
