ACCELERATION

Base Class Average
7 6.4

Smooth, quick, and quiet aptly describe the LS 400. Acceleration is strong at 6.1 seconds to 60 mph in our tests, highway passing ability impressive.

FUEL ECONOMY

Base Class Average
5 4.3

Premium fuel is required, but we've averaged 21.3 mpg on a long highway trip and 19.0 in a 50/50 mix of city and freeway driving.

RIDE QUALITY

Base Class Average
9 7.5

Outstanding overall, but higher-speed driving induces unwanted body float over big humps and dips, and sharp bumps jolt more than expected.

STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING

Base Class Average
6 5.9

Though too large and softly damped to be nimble, the LS 400 has good grip and balance for a luxury 4-door, plus only modest cornering lean. The Vehicle Stability Control helps in slippery conditions.

QUIETNESS

Base Class Average
10 7.7

Lexus's twin-cam V8 emits only a muted growl at high rpm, and lots of sound dampening makes this one of the world's quietest cars.

CONTROLS

Base Class Average
7 5.5

Most everything's easy to see, reach, and use. The optional navigation system is helpful, but radio and climate controls work from its touch-screen display--rather fussy and distracting.

ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)

Base Class Average
10 7.6

Seats are wide and comfortable, and even larger folk get ample head and leg room.

ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)

Base Class Average
8 6.8

Adults enjoy good leg space but only adequate head room, and no one will like straddling the bulky transmission hump in the rear-drive LS.

CARGO ROOM

Base Class Average
3 4.4

More than adequate for a long weekend, but only so-so for a luxury sedan.

VALUE WITHIN CLASS

Base Class Average
7 3.8

Though it's easily $60,000 with options, the LS 400 is unexcelled for features, refinement, performance, reliability, and safety. High reliability and blue-chip resale values help mitigate the price of admission. Note also that Lexus is preparing a redesign of its flagship for 2001 as the LS 430.
