Vehicle Highlights

Traditionally the entry-level sedan from Toyota's luxury brand, the ES 300 gets a mild revamp in advance of the spring 2000 debut of a smaller rear-wheel-drive stablemate, the IS 300. The front-drive ES remains a visually distinct cousin to the V6 Toyota Camry sedan, but has slightly more power and torque, plus more standard features including front side airbags and traction control. Lengthening the list this year are rear child-seat anchors, self-dimming inside and driver's mirrors, a trunk pass-through lock, and automatic volume control for the sound system. In addition, the available driver's-seat memory now incorporates mirror settings, the optional heated seats go from one to two warmth levels, and the extra-cost Vehicle Skid Control system is bolstered by a new Lexus Brake Assist feature that automatically provides full hydraulic power in response to strong, quick brake-pedal movement. New options include 16-inch wheels, high-intensity headlamps, and ventilation microfilter. Also, new Platinum Series option packages add special trim inside and out and include a Lexus-paid American Express credit card for two years, the last a $600 value, according to Lexus. The 2000 ES also sports minor front and rear styling changes, plus more wood dashboard trim. Returning options include power moonroof and a "semi-active" Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) that continuously adjusts shock-absorber damping within soft, normal, or sport ranges as set by the driver.

COMPETITION

This hotly contested segment has a clear benchmark, it is the Acura TL (and its 2-door cousin Acura CL). The TL succeeds in blending comfort, style, luxury, and sport into an efficient package at an affordable price.
But the Acura's not for everyone. We also recommend the sporty and Euro-flavored Audi A6, the comfortable Buick Park Avenue, the affordable and fast Infiniti I30, and the luxury-orientated Lexus ES 300.
